Carver Knocks Off John Carroll Catholic 32-16

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Carver Rams started their season 1-0 with a decisive 32-16 victory over the John Carroll Catholic Cavaliers Friday night. Playing at a newly revamped Pat Sullivan Field, the Rams established an early lead and never looked back. The Rams victory gives them a 6-5 advantage all time in the series that dates back to 1977.  

Rams Build Commanding First-Half Lead

Head coach Rod Carson’s Rams came out strong, putting up 16 unanswered points in the first quarter. The offense moved the ball effectively, leaving the John Carroll defense struggling to keep pace.

The Cavaliers found their footing early in the second quarter, putting together a drive that resulted in a touchdown. However, a failed two-point conversion attempt kept the score at 16-6. Carver answered quickly, mounting two consecutive scoring drives to extend their lead before halftime. John Carroll added a field goal, but the Rams went into the locker room with a commanding 32-9 advantage.

Defenses Tighten in Second Half

The pace of the game shifted after halftime, as both defenses took control. The high-scoring action of the first two quarters was replaced by a defensive stalemate. Neither team managed to find the end zone in the third quarter or for most of the fourth.

The scoring drought was finally broken in the game’s closing moments. With only 51 seconds left to play, John Carroll scored a late touchdown, bringing the final score to 32-16.

Looking Ahead

Now 1-0, the Carver Rams will prepare for a 5A Region 5 matchup against the Briarwood Christian Lions on Friday, September 12. The Lions enter the game with a 1-2 record after securing a 14-13 Region win over the winless Ramsay Rams Thursday night.

Coach Will Mara’s Cavaliers (0-3, 0-1) will continue their search for their first win of the season as they travel to Blount County to take on the Hayden Wildcats. The Wildcats also have an 0-3 record, coming off a 62-34 non-region loss to the Douglas Eagles.
