No. 8 Homewood Dominates Woodlawn 52-8, Improves to 4-0
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The No. 8 ranked Homewood Patriots delivered a commanding performance Friday night, defeating the Woodlawn Colonels 52-8 in a Class 6A, Region 5 matchup in the Magic City.
Head coach Ben Berguson’s Patriots improve to 4-0 on the season, 2-0 in region play. The Colonels are still searching for their first victory at 0-4 (0-2)
The Patriot offense came off the bus firing. On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Kaleb Carson connected with receiver Tomon Felton for a 65-yard touchdown pass, setting the tone just seconds into the contest. Carson was efficient throughout the game, completing 6 of 9 passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns. He later found J.T. Watts for a 28-yard score in the second quarter and connected with Felton again for a 14-yard touchdown just before halftime.
The Patriots’ defense was equally dominant, holding the Colonels to just 120 total yards and forcing six turnovers. The defensive front applied constant pressure, leading to three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Defensive back Joey Luckianow highlighted the unit’s performance with an interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Homewood’s ground attack provided balance. Davis Griffin contributed a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and Reid Goldstein added a 22-yard scoring run late in the second. In the third quarter, Chappy Chapleau extended the lead to 52-0 with a 20-yard touchdown run.
Felton led the Patriot receiving corps, finishing with three catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
Woodlawn scored late in the fourth quarter, avoiding a shutout when quarterback Cornealius Hudson connected with Hendric Smith on a 70-yard scoring strike.
Looking ahead, the Patriots will look to remain perfect welcoming an improving Jackson-Olin Mustangs (2-1, 1-0) squad to Waldrop Stadium next Friday night. The Colonels will continue their search for their first win of the season when they host the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils (1-3, 0-2).
