Good Hope Dominates Cordova 34-6, Remains Undefeated
GOOD HOPE, AL – The Good Hope Raiders secured a decisive 34-6 victory over the Cordova Blue Devils at James W. Shabel Stadium on Friday night. After a scoreless first quarter, the Raiders’ offense ignited, scoring 21 unanswered points in the second quarter and never looking back. The win pushes Good Hope’s record to a perfect 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in region play.
A Slow Start Gives Way to Offensive Explosion
Good Hope received the opening kickoff but struggled to find an early rhythm. A short pass from quarterback Parker Johnson to Carter Rutherford moved the chains, and Johnson followed up with consecutive first downs, one on the ground and another through the air to Tucker Keef. However, a penalty stalled the drive, forcing a punt.
The Raiders’ defense matched the intensity, forcing a quick punt from Cordova. Good Hope’s offense took the field again but turned the ball over on downs. The Blue Devils capitalized on the opportunity, using a strong ground game to earn a pair of first downs. Their momentum was stopped when the Raider defense stood firm on a crucial fourth-down attempt, getting the ball back for the offense as the first quarter came to a close.
Raiders Find Their Stride in the Second Quarter
The second quarter proved to be the turning point. Good Hope’s offense came alive, establishing a powerful running game that wore down the Cordova defense. A combination of tough runs from Johnson, Mason Drake, and Rutherford set the tone. Two significant gains by Drake put the Raiders deep in Blue Devil territory at the 14-yard line. On the next play, Ryker Hancock broke through for the game’s first touchdown, giving Good Hope a 7-0 lead with 6:53 left in the half.
Energized by the score, the Raider defense forced a three-and-out, quickly returning possession to their offense. Drake again made his presence felt with an 8-yard run for a first down. The drive’s highlight came on the next play when Johnson, seemingly wrapped up by multiple defenders, scrambled for a remarkable 39-yard gain, moving the ball to the 5-yard line. Drake finished the drive, punching it in for a touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0.
Good Hope wasn’t finished. After another defensive stop forced a Cordova punt, Johnson’s running ability continued to frustrate the Blue Devil defense. He reeled off back-to-back runs of 18 and 22 yards. Facing a fourth-and-goal from the 15-yard line, Johnson connected with Drake for a 15-yard touchdown pass, sending the Raiders into halftime with a commanding 21-0 lead.
Second Half Action
Cordova showed signs of life to start the third quarter. A long run on their opening possession, aided by a penalty against Good Hope, put the Blue Devils at the 13-yard line. They later converted a key fourth down to keep the drive alive before finally scoring on a 2-yard run to make the score 21-6. Momentum briefly swung toward Cordova when they recovered the subsequent kickoff after it deflected off a Raider player. However, the Good Hope defense held strong once more, forcing a punt and preventing any further damage.
The Raiders’ offense went back to its proven formula. The ground attack, led by Drake, Johnson, and Rutherford, continued to control the line of scrimmage. Following a penalty that set them back to the 25-yard line, Johnson found Drake again, this time for a 20-yard touchdown pass that pushed the lead to 28-6.
In the fourth, the Raider defense forced another punt. Mason Drake put the finishing touches on the victory with a 14-yard touchdown run, his fourth score of the night, bringing the final tally to 34-6.
