Jaedyn Powell Powers Hueytown Past Bessemer City in Region Showdown
BESSEMER, AL – The Hueytown Golden Gophers defeated their rival, the Bessemer City Purple Tigers, with a commanding 28-7 road victory on Friday night. The win marks a significant moment in the Class 6A, Region 4 high school football season, improving Hueytown’s record to 2-2 overall and a perfect 2-0 in region play. For the Purple Tigers, it was their first loss of the 2025 season, dropping them to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the region.
Hueytown quarterback Jaedyn Powell delivered a standout performance, leading the Golden Gophers’ offense by throwing for four touchdowns. Powell completed 17 of his 31 pass attempts for a total of 288 yards. His scoring plays included two touchdown passes to Quentell Jackson for 27 and 15 yards, a 53-yard bomb to Kamar Williams-Eatmon, and a 30-yard strike to Anthony Robinson.
This victory is the second consecutive win for Coach Greg Patterson’s Golden Gophers. After starting the season with two losses, the Gopher defense has found its stride, limiting both Paul Bryant and Bessemer City to just seven points in their last two games.
The Bessemer City Purple Tigers faced a major setback early in the game when starting quarterback Vernon Slaughter left in the first quarter with an injury and did not return. Freshman Brandon Gooden stepped in and managed to connect with Cheynis Wilson-Fuller for a 15-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Despite the late score, Bessemer City’s offense struggled against the tough Hueytown defense. The Purple Tigers were held to their lowest point total of the season and committed two turnovers, a fumble and an interception. Their ground game was contained, gaining only 55 yards on 24 rushing attempts.
Looking ahead, the Golden Gophers will step out of region play to host the Class 7A Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa Patriots (3-2, 1-2). The Purple Tigers will have a bye week to regroup before traveling to Tuscaloosa to face the winless Paul Bryant Stampede (0-4, 0-2) on October 3rd.
