Corner Tops Jacksonville 17-7 in Non-Region Contest

CORNER, AL – The Corner Yellow Jackets secured a 17-7 victory over the Jacksonville Golden Eagles in a hard-fought game on Friday night in north Jefferson County. The Yellow Jackets’ balanced offense and determined defense proved to be the difference maker.

The win improves head coach Trent Cambell’s Yellow Jackets to 4-1 on the season while the Golden Eagles slip to 3-3.  

The first half was a defensive battle, with the only points coming as time expired. Corner’s Bradley Turner successfully kicked a 35-yard field goal, giving his team a narrow 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, Corner extended its advantage when quarterback Keaton Coffee connected with Spencer Unruh for a 17-yard touchdown pass, pushing the score to 10-0. Jacksonville quickly responded, however, with Qua McNeal finding the end zone on a 10-yard touchdown run with just 1:59 remaining in the quarter, trimming Corner’s lead to 10-7.

The Yellow Jackets sealed the win in the fourth quarter. With 5:29 left on the clock, CJ Brown powered his way in for a 5-yard rushing touchdown, finalizing the score at 17-7.

Unruh was a key performer for Corner, rushing 31 times for 139 yards and adding the 17-yard touchdown reception. Coffee was efficient under center, completing 8 of his 10 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing 45 yards on 11 carries.

Defensively, Rhett Cofer led the charge for Corner with 11 tackles. Brown also made a significant impact on defense with 9 tackles, in addition to his 16 rushing yards and touchdown on offense.

Looking ahead the Yellow Jackets will return to Class 5A, Region 5 action next week with a road trip to north Shelby County to take on Briarwood Christian (3-3) in a key region showdown. Jacksonville, now 3-3, will host Springville (1-4) in a Region 6 matchup.
