Class 5A No. 3 Fairview Outlasts Russellville 35-28 in Key Region Matchup

FAIRVIEW, AL – In a pivotal Class 5A, Region 7 matchup, with significant postseason implications, the Fairview Aggies pulled ahead in the second half to secure a hard-fought 35-28 victory over the Russellville Golden Tigers on Friday night at Dafford Smith Stadium.

The win improves head coach George Redding Jr.’s Aggies to a perfect 6-0 on the season.  They are now sitting alone at the top of Region 7 with an unblemished 4-0 mark in region play with a pair of region contests remaining.  Russellville slips to 3-3 with a 3-1 mark in the region.

The game started with a bang as Russellville scored on a 56-yard touchdown pass less than a minute into the contest. The potent Aggie offense, who has lit up the scoreboard to 262 points though six games, quickly mounted a response. An impressive run by Jake Harper moved the Aggies into Russellville territory. Despite having a touchdown recalled due to a penalty, Fairview executed a perfect trick play on fourth-and-seven. Kolt Redding handed off to Rex Chandler, who then found a wide-open Ayden Batz for a 43-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.

The visitors from Franklin County threatened to score again on their next possession but missed a field goal attempt. The Aggies then put together a long, methodical drive. Redding connected with Conner Scott for a key gain, and strong running from Harper and Chandler set up a 13-yard touchdown run by Jace Stevens, giving Fairview a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. The Golden Tigers answered swiftly, tying the game at 14-14 with a 28-yard touchdown pass. The half ended with the score knotted.

Fairview established its ground game to open the third quarter. The running back duo of Redding and Harper consistently moved the chains, wearing down the Russellville defense. Harper capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run, pushing the Aggies ahead 21-14. Following a quick three-and-out by the Golden Tigers, Fairview’s offense went right back to work. Big runs from Harper and Stevens brought the Aggies deep into scoring position, and Harper punched it in from 10 yards out to extend the lead to 28-14.

The Golden Tigers fought back with a sustained drive of their own, converting on multiple third and fourth downs before a five-yard touchdown pass cut Fairview’s lead to 28-21 with under six minutes remaining. The Aggies responded immediately. On the ensuing drive, Harper broke through the line for a 42-yard touchdown run, his third of the night, to make it 35-21.

Still, Russellville refused to quit. Their passing attack continued to challenge the Aggie defense, resulting in a 20-yard touchdown that made it a one-score game again at 35-28 with just 1:52 left. However, Fairview recovered the following kickoff and a crucial first down by Harper allowed the Aggies to run out the clock and seal the victory.

Harper led the Aggies with an outstanding performance, finishing with 164 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. Chandler contributed the 43-yard touchdown pass, and Stevens added a score on the ground.

Looking ahead, the Aggies will travel to Priceville (5-, 3-0) for another tough region matchup.  Russellville steps out of region play with a road trip to Town Creek to take on the Class 4A Hatton Hornets (4-2, 3-2).
