Frye Dominates as No. 1 Clay-Chalkville Shuts Out Mountain Brook 49-0
CLAY, AL – Senior quarterback Aaron Frye delivered an exceptional performance, leading the Class 6A No. 1 Clay-Chalkville Cougars to a decisive 49-0 victory over Mountain Brook on Friday night. Frye was responsible for 331 total yards and five touchdowns in a dominant region win.
After a quiet opening series, the Cougars’ offense ignited. Frye guided Clay-Chalkville (7-0, 3-0) on seven consecutive scoring drives, showcasing his dual-threat ability. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns, connecting on scoring plays of 37, 74, 13, and 17 yards. On the ground, he added 114 yards on just nine carries, including a spectacular 51-yard touchdown run.
The Clay-Chalkville football team established control early. With 4:32 left in the first quarter, Frye hit Ole Miss commit Corey Barber for a 37-yard touchdown, putting the Cougars up 7-0.
The momentum continued into the second quarter with senior running back Joshua Woods. Woods found the end zone twice, first on a 2-yard run and later on a 36-yard dash, extending the lead to 21-0. A Deon Callins interception set up another score just before halftime, as Frye found Nasir Ray for a 13-yard touchdown pass, making it 28-0 at the break.
The second half featured more explosive plays from the Cougars. Frye broke the game open with a 51-yard scramble for a touchdown early in the third quarter. Just 83 seconds later, he connected with Kaleb Amerson for a 74-yard touchdown pass.
This Mountain Brook game recap was defined by the Cougars’ defense, which was just as formidable as its offense. The unit held the Spartans to only two pass completions and 174 total yards. Brayden Butler secured the team’s second interception of the night in the third quarter. The shutout was Mountain Brook’s first since September 2020.
Clay-Chalkville’s final score came early in the fourth quarter when Barber caught his second touchdown pass from Frye, this time from 17 yards out. The drive was kept alive by a 52-yard run from Xavier Starks on a fake punt.
Alongside the stellar Aaron Frye performance, Woods contributed significantly with 107 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Barber was a key target, finishing with touchdown receptions of 37 and 17 yards.
With the victory, Clay-Chalkville remains in control of Class 6A, Region 6. Next week, the Cougars travel to Huffman, while Mountain Brook (3-4, 1-2) visits Pinson Valley
