A.J. Robinson Sparks Hueytown to 43-38 Win Over McAdory

McCalla, AL – Hueytown’s A.J. Robinson delivered a standout performance, scoring three touchdowns to guide the visiting Golden Gophers to a thrilling 43-38 victory over rival McAdory. Robinson rushed for 119 yards and two scores, adding a crucial 95-yard kickoff return for another touchdown.

This win marks the Gophers’ tenth consecutive victory in the heated western Jefferson County rivalry. More importantly, it places Hueytown (4-3, 4-0) alone at the top of the Class 6A Region 4 standings and gives them a critical head-to-head tie-breaker over the Yellow Jackets (5-1, 3-1).

Head Coach Greg Patterson’s Golden Gophers can clinch their second consecutive region crown with a win over Brookwood next Friday night.

The game’s defining moment came late in the fourth quarter. With the score tied 36-36 and just over seven minutes remaining, McAdory pinned Hueytown deep in its own territory at the 5-yard line. On the second play of the drive, Hueytown quarterback Jaedyn Powell connected with Quen’Trell Jackson on a post route for a spectacular 95-yard touchdown pass, shifting the momentum entirely.

Facing a seven-point deficit, McAdory’s hopes for a comeback faded when quarterback Justin Patton was sacked for a 20-yard loss, creating a third-and-30 situation. The Yellow Jackets were forced to punt, and Hueytown’s offense, led by Robinson, ran out the remaining clock. Powell took a deliberate safety as time expired to seal the win.

This was not the only time Powell led a significant scoring drive from deep in their own territory. In the third quarter, a bad snap left Hueytown with a second-and-23 from their own 10-yard line. Powell responded by hitting Kamar Williams-Eatmon for a 70-yard gain, moving the ball into McAdory territory. Following completions to Antonio Porter and Kobe Coleman, Robinson finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, cutting McAdory’s lead to 23-21.

The third quarter featured a rapid exchange of scores. After Robinson’s touchdown, McAdory answered with a 14-yard scoring run from Derrion Davis to push their lead to 29-21. Robinson immediately countered, returning the subsequent kickoff for a touchdown. A successful two-point conversion tied the game, setting the stage for the dramatic final quarter of high school football highlights.

Looking ahead, Hueytown aims to clinch the Class 6A Region 4 title next week on the road at Brookwood. McAdory will travel to Tuscaloosa to take on the Paul Bryant Stempede.  .
