Prattville Upsets No. 4 Hewitt-Trussville in Region 3 Showdown

PRATTVILLE, AL – The Prattville Lions capitalized on critical special teams errors to secure a 24-21 upset victory over Class 7A, No. 4 Hewitt-Trussville on Friday night in front of their home crowd at Stanley Jensen Stadium. The Lions’ defense and special teams were instrumental in the win, directly creating two touchdowns.

With the win head coach Bobby Carr’s Lions improve to 4-3 on the season, 3-2 in Region 3 play.  Hewitt-Trussville dropped their second straight region game, after starting the season 6-0, to slip to 6-2 overall, 3-2 in the region.

The first major miscue for the visiting Huskies came on an errant punt snap. The resulting play led to an interception return for a touchdown by Prattville’s Eric Townsend, giving the Lions a 10-7 lead. Hewitt-Trussville had initially taken the lead with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jack Floyd to Jackson Martin.

In the third quarter, Prattville extended its advantage to 17-7 when quarterback Will McKay connected with Chris Brown for a touchdown. The Huskies fought back, with CJ Davis scoring on a 14-yard run to close the gap to 17-14.

However, another costly special teams mistake doomed Hewitt-Trussville’s comeback hopes. A second bad punt snap sailed into the end zone, where a Prattville player recovered it for a touchdown, pushing the score to 24-14 in the final quarter.

Hewitt-Trussville managed a late touchdown from Deuce Alston, but Prattville successfully recovered the subsequent onside kick and ran out the clock to seal the victory.

Looking ahead, Prattville travels to face Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (5-3, 2-3), while Hewitt-Trussville will make the drive south to Herdmont Park to take on the Oak Mountain Eagles (3-4, 1-4).
