Hewitt-Trussville Powers Past Oak Mountain 36-21

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The seventh-ranked Hewitt-Trussville Huskies secured a key Class 7A, Region 3 victory over Oak Mountain Friday night in north Shelby County, turning a tight first half into a decisive 36-21 win.

The victory improves the Huskies to 7-2 overall, 4-2 in region play.  Oak Mountain drops their third straight to slip to 3-5, 1-5 in the region.

The game’s scoring opened with a touchdown from Hewitt-Trussville’s CJ Davis. Oak Mountain quickly responded in the second quarter, as a touchdown run from Marty Myricks tied the contest at 7-7. The Huskies reclaimed the lead with a 27-yard field goal by Nathan Fritz, an advantage they would hold for the remainder of the game.

A critical defensive play just before halftime extended Hewitt-Trussville’s lead. De’Narrius Crawford tipped a pass and intercepted it at the Oak Mountain 1-yard line. This set up a short touchdown run for James Kelly, sending the Huskies into the locker room with a 16-7 lead.

Head coach Josh Floyd’s Huskies carried that momentum into the second half. Quarterback Zach Benedict scored on a run midway through the third quarter, pushing the score to 22-7. Shortly after, a short pass to Deuce Alston turned into a 67-yard catch-and-run touchdown, increasing the Huskies’ advantage to 29-7.

Oak Mountain’s offense answered when quarterback Charlie Vacarella ran for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 29-14. However, the Huskies struck again when Benedict connected with Dane Askins for a 27-yard touchdown pass, making it 36-14. The game’s final points came on a 95-yard touchdown pass from Vacarella to Kasen Lemons for Oak Mountain.

Looking ahead, the Huskies will host winless Tuscaloosa County (0-8, 0-6) next week to wrap up region play. Oak Mountain will return to action next Friday night with a road trip to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (5-4, 2-4).
