Helena Runs Past Calera, Clinches 6A Playoff Spot

HELENA, AL – The Helena Huskies clinched a playoff berth Friday night, overpowering the Calera Eagles with a dominant ground game for a 39-21 victory. The win marks Helena’s third straight and secures the team’s position as the number three seed in Class 6A, Region 3.

Helena’s offense was unstoppable on the ground, racking up 356 total rushing yards at Husky Stadium. Running back Dom Santiago delivered a standout performance, rushing 21 times for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Jacoby Studimire provided strong support, adding 111 yards on 12 carries.

While the rushing attack led the way, the Huskies also found success in their passing game. Quarterback Nate Ferguson completed a 79-yard touchdown pass, and Caleb Soreano added another touchdown through the air. Davis Kelley was the primary target, finishing with four receptions for 100 yards and a score. Isaiah Kenney also contributed with a 15-yard touchdown catch.

With this key region victory, Helena’s record improves to 4-5 on the season and 4-2 in region play. Calera slips to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the region.

Head coach Richie Busby’s Huskies will close their regular season at home against the Class 4A Tarrant Wildcats (1-8, 0-7). Following that, they will travel to face Bessemer City (7-1, 4-1) in the first round of the postseason on November 7th. The Eagles will travel to Milbrook next Friday night to take on the Stanhope Elmore Mustangs (6-3, 4-2) to close out their 2025 campaign.
