Vestavia Hills Outlasts Hoover 39-30 in Rivalry Showdown

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL – In a high-stakes Class 7A, Region 3 finale, the Vestavia Hills Rebels secured a 39-30 victory over rival Hoover on Friday night at Thompson Reynolds Stadium. The game, marked by explosive offensive plays and critical special teams moments, solidified playoff positions for both teams. The win earned the No. 2-ranked Rebels third place in the region, while the No. 5-ranked Buccaneers claimed the fourth and final playoff spot.

The outcome of the Prattville vs. Thompson game loomed large, with a Prattville win threatening to eliminate the loser of the Vestavia-Hoover contest. Thompson’s victory, however, ensured both programs would advance to the postseason.

A Tale of Two Halves

The first half was an offensive showcase, with both teams trading blows. Hoover struck first with a 45-yard field goal from James Bryant. The Buccaneers extended their lead to 10-0 after quarterback Kaleb Freeman connected with Jeremiah Tabb for a 14-yard touchdown pass.

Vestavia Hills answered when quarterback Charlie Taaffe scored on a 1-yard run. An unconventional two-point conversion cut Hoover’s lead to 10-8. The game saw its share of drama, as costly penalties negated potential scores for the Rebels. An illegal forward pass by Taaffe nullified a touchdown pass, and a later holding call wiped out a 4-yard touchdown run by the quarterback. Despite the setbacks, Vestavia managed to add a 37-yard field goal from Sloan Morgan just before halftime.

Hoover’s passing attack remained potent. Freeman delivered a 34-yard touchdown pass to Jonah Winston and a 65-yard strike to Hunter Purdue. Vestavia’s Noah Boylan added a 5-yard touchdown run, and the first half concluded with Hoover holding a 24-18 lead.

Rebels Dominate After the Break

Vestavia Hills emerged from the locker room with a renewed focus on its ground game. The offensive line began to impose its will, wearing down the Hoover defense. Running back Carson Purdy gave the Rebels their first lead of the night, 25-24, with a 3-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.

The game’s most electrifying moment came on special teams. After the Rebel defense pinned Hoover deep, Taaffe fielded a punt at the Hoover 37-yard line. He took a few steps before throwing a lateral across the field to Luke Stubbs, who raced down the sideline for a 35-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 32-24.

Hoover fought back, with CJ Cowley scoring on a 4-yard run to make it 32-30. However, Purdy sealed the victory for Vestavia Hills with his second 3-yard touchdown run of the night with under four minutes remaining.

Standout Performances

Charlie Taaffe, QB, Vestavia Hills: The junior quarterback was instrumental in the win, overcoming early mistakes to lead his team. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 146 yards and rushed 20 times for 109 yards and a touchdown. His leadership and pivotal role in the punt return touchdown were crucial.

Carson Purdy, RB, Vestavia Hills: Purdy was a workhorse, particularly in the second half. He finished with 125 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, consistently moving the chains and wearing down the defense.

Kaleb Freeman, QB, Hoover: The Hoover quarterback had an efficient and productive night, completing 20 of 25 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns. He kept the Buccaneers in the game with his accurate passing.

Overall, Vestavia Hills outgained Hoover 414-339, with a dominant 268-139 advantage in the running game.
