Parker Overpowers Oxford 42-21 in 6A Playoff Opener
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Parker Thundering Herd began their Class 6A title defense with a decisive 42-21 first-round playoff victory against the Oxford Yellow Jackets on Thursday night at Major Brown Stadium.
The ninth-ranked Thundering Herd (8-3) demonstrated their offensive strength by mounting two separate 21-point scoring runs during the game.
Oxford struck first on the second play from scrimmage when quarterback Maddox Mims connected with AJ Ford for a quick touchdown. However, Parker responded with an explosive first quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points in the final 3:55. The surge began with quarterback Dylan Reese finding Lazayveon Lowe for a 54-yard touchdown pass. Reese followed up with a 45-yard scoring pass to Kentrell Davis, and a 9-yard touchdown run by Cameron Murphy extended the lead to 21-7.
The Yellow Jackets narrowed the gap in the second quarter after Mims found Beau Mims with a 15-yard touchdown pass, making the score 21-14.
Parker answered before halftime, as Reese connected with Lowe for a 19-yard touchdown, sending the teams into the locker room with a 28-14 score.
The Thundering Herd sealed the win in the third quarter. Running back Chancellor Sparks scored on a 10-yard run, and just 34 seconds later, linebacker Nedarius Davis returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown—his third interception return for a score this season—pushing the lead to 42-14.
Oxford scored the final points of the game late in the third quarter with another Mims-to-Mims connection, concluding the scoring at 42-21. The loss ends the season for Coach Sam Adams’ Yellow Jackets with a 5-6 record.
Reese finished the night 14-of-20 for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Lowe was his top target, with three catches for 93 yards and two scores. Sparks led the rushing attack with 106 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
Coach Frank Warren’s Parker Thundering Herd will now face the undefeated Muscle Shoals Trojans in the second round of the playoffs.
