Briarwood Christian Overpowers Russellville 42-7, Advances to 5A Quarterfinal Showdown
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Briarwood Christian Lions secured a decisive 42-7 victory over the Russellville Golden Tigers Friday night at Lion’s Pride Stadium. The impressive second-round performance in the AHSAA Class 5A playoffs sends Briarwood to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2019. The win extends the Lions’ playoff winning streak against the Golden Tigers to 4-0.
With the victory, Head coach Matthew Forester’s Lions improve to 7-4 and now prepares for a challenging quarterfinal matchup against the second-ranked Moody Blue Devils next week.
Lions Dominate from the Opening Kickoff
Briarwood established its dominance early, scoring touchdowns on each of its first four offensive possessions to build an insurmountable 28-0 halftime lead. The scoring started just three plays into the game when wide receiver John Campbell took a reverse 49 yards down the sideline for a touchdown with 10:40 still left in the first quarter.
The Lions’ defense quickly made its presence felt. Less than four minutes later, Brandt Aho intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards, setting up the offense deep in Russellville territory. On the very next play, senior running back Eli Thompson scored on a 10-yard run, pushing the lead to 14-0 with 7:17 remaining in the opening period.
Thompson Powers the Lion Offense
Eli Thompson was the offensive workhorse for the Lions, finishing the night with four touchdowns. Following a strong catch-and-run by Sam Canale that flipped field position, Thompson powered into the end zone for his second score, extending the lead to 21-0 before the first quarter ended.
The offensive line continued to control the line of scrimmage in the second quarter. Thompson capped another efficient drive with his third touchdown of the half, making the score 28-0 before the break. He added his fourth and final touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard run that pushed the lead to 42-0. Thompson concluded his standout performance with 126 yards on 14 carries.
A Stifling Defensive Performance
While the offense clicked with rhythm and balance, Briarwood’s defense delivered an equally impressive performance. The Lions stifled the Golden Tigers’ offense throughout the game, holding quarterback Whit Goodwin to just 9-of-24 passing for 61 yards. The defensive unit, anchored by linebacker Gage Nasworthy’s nearly 20 tackles, forced a stretch of nine consecutive incompletions at one point.
The second half continued in the same fashion. On a fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line in the third quarter, quarterback Charles Dedmon found receiver Dane Whitehead for a touchdown, pushing the margin to 35-0. Dedmon finished the night with an efficient 8-of-11 passing for 129 yards and a touchdown.
Russellville’s lone score came late in the fourth quarter when Braxton Duncan ran for a 15-yard touchdown with under two minutes remaining.
Looking Ahead to the Quarterfinals
After starting the year with back-to-back losses, Briarwood Christian has now won four of its last five games. The Lion defense has been particularly sharp in the playoffs, holding both Russellville and first-round opponent Leeds to single-digit scores.
Briarwood (7-5) will now travel to Bill Morris Stadium to face the powerhouse Moody Blue Devils (12-0) in the state quarterfinals next Friday night. Moody advanced after a 60-14 win over Priceville.
