FORT PAYNE, AL – Mountain Brook delivered a powerful performance Friday night, securing a decisive 35-14 road victory over Fort Payne in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. The Spartans established their dominance early and never looked back, scoring all 35 of their points in the first half to extend their winning streak to five games.
The win improves Mountain Brook’s season record to 9-3 and propels them into the state quarterfinals. For Fort Payne, the loss marks the end of an impressive season, concluding their nine-game winning streak and leaving them with a final record of 10-2.
A First-Half Spartan Offensive Explosion
The Spartans set an explosive tone from the very first play. Quarterback Cayden Hofbauer broke free for a 61-yard run, immediately putting the Fort Payne defense on its heels. This big play set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Stuart Andrews, giving Mountain Brook a 7-0 lead just over a minute into the game.
Mountain Brook’s offense continued its relentless attack on the next possession. After forcing a quick three-and-out, the Spartans covered 74 yards in only three plays. Hofbauer contributed another significant run of 24 yards for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 14-0 in the first quarter.
The offensive showcase wasn’t limited to the ground game. Hofbauer connected with John Colvin for a 48-yard touchdown pass, capping a 70-yard drive and extending the Spartans’ advantage to a commanding 21-0. The momentum was firmly in Mountain Brook’s favor as the first half continued.
Before halftime, Hofbauer found the end zone again with a 9-yard rushing touchdown. The Spartans’ scoring was capped by a spectacular 60-yard touchdown run from Trey Vinson. By the time the teams headed to the locker room, Mountain Brook held an insurmountable 35-0 lead.
