Thompson Blanks Mary Montgomery 54-0 in 7A Quarterfinals
ALABASTER, AL – The Thompson Warriors secured their 21st consecutive home playoff win with a decisive 54-0 shutout against the Mary Montgomery Vikings. The victory in the AHSAA Class 7A quarterfinals propels the defending state champions to the semifinals. Thompson (9-3) will now travel to face the top-ranked Central-Phenix City Red Devils (11-1) for a chance to compete for their seventh state title.
A Dominant First Half Performance
From the opening kickoff at Spartan Stadium, Coach Mark Freeman’s Warriors established control. They delivered a stunning performance against a Mary Montgomery team (10-2) that had entered the contest with the third-ranked scoring defense in Class 7A. However, Thompson’s top-ranked defense proved superior, physically overwhelming the Vikings’ offense and securing the first shutout against them this season.
Thompson quarterback Trent Seaborn, a University of Alabama commit, orchestrated a nearly flawless first half. He completed 14 of 15 passes, leading the Warriors to a commanding 41-0 lead by halftime. The offense scored on eight of its nine possessions, with the only stop coming from a fumble recovered by Vikings linebacker Devin Pettway. Seaborn’s precision passing was too much for the Mary Montgomery defense to handle.
Seaborn contributed four touchdown passes, connecting with Pryce Lewis for a 5-yard score, Darion Moseley on a 56-yard play, Urijah Casey from 8 yards out, and Trey Knight for another 5-yard touchdown. He also added a 1-yard rushing touchdown to his impressive stat line for the night.
Warriors’ Offense and Defense Fire on All Cylinders
The offensive onslaught wasn’t limited to the passing game. Running back R.J. Evans found the end zone on a 3-yard run. In the second half, with the game well in hand, backup quarterback Jahari Nation threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Mathew Bevelle. Jafari Pegues capped the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown run.
Thompson’s defense was just as formidable as its offense. The Warriors held the Vikings to only 12 rushing yards in the first half and 91 total for the game, a figure well below their average of 145 yards. Mary Montgomery only managed to cross into Thompson territory twice. One of those drives was cut short when defensive back Damonte Tabb intercepted a pass from quarterback Jeremy Menhennett, returning it 40 yards to set up Evans’ touchdown. The Vikings struggled on critical downs, converting just 3 of their 14 third-down attempts.
By the end of the game, the Warriors had amassed 398 yards of total offense, while their defense held Mary Montgomery to just 213.
Looking Ahead to the Semifinals
This quarterfinal victory sets up a highly anticipated semifinal clash between Thompson and Central-Phenix City. The Warriors will travel to Garrett-Harrison Stadium next Friday night for the showdown. The winner of that game will earn a spot in the Super 7 championships in Birmingham.
For Mary Montgomery, the loss marks the end of a successful season that concludes with a 10-2 record. Coach Zach Golson’s four-year effort has transformed the program from a struggling team into one of the state’s most respected competitors.
