Coosa Christian Advances to Class 2A Title Game with Thrilling 44-36 Victory Over Pisgah

PISGAH, AL – Coosa Christian’s star running back, Kylen Johnson, delivered a standout performance to propel the Conquerors into the Class 2A state championship game. Johnson’s sixth touchdown of the night—a 23-yard run with just over three minutes remaining—sealed a dramatic 44-36 win over Pisgah at Sam Kenimer Field. He also added a crucial two-point conversion to secure the victory.

The win extends Coosa Christian’s unbeaten streak to 12 games, improving their record to 12-2. Meanwhile, Pisgah, which had been undefeated at home this season (7-0) and riding an 11-game winning streak, saw their impressive run come to an end.

Johnson’s Record-Breaking Night

Kylen Johnson was unstoppable, carrying the ball 31 times for an astounding 311 yards. He found the end zone on runs of 12, 13, and 69 yards in the first half, added a 15-yard score in the third quarter, and capped off his night with 32- and 23-yard touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Over the past two weeks, Johnson has amassed more than 500 rushing yards, solidifying his status as one of the top performers in the state.

Pisgah’s Strong Effort

Despite the loss, Pisgah’s offense put up a valiant fight. Quarterback Jackson Smalley completed 24 of 37 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Landon Watkins was a key target, hauling in 10 receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown. Jett Jeffrey contributed two touchdowns, including a 1-yard run that tied the game at 36-36 with 7:47 left, thanks to Smalley’s successful two-point conversion pass.

Coosa Christian’s Road to Redemption

This marks a historic moment for Coosa Christian, a program still chasing its first AHSAA title. The Conquerors previously reached the Class 1A championship game in 2023 but fell short against Leroy. The team faced significant challenges this season, including being placed on restrictive probation due to violations under head coach Mark O’Bryant. However, the probation was lifted after O’Bryant’s suspension for the 2025 season, allowing the Conquerors to advance to the postseason.

Interim head coach Rush Propst has been instrumental in the team’s resurgence. Propst, who took over before the 2025 season, is no stranger to success. This will be his seventh trip to the AHSAA Super 7 state championships. He previously led the Hoover Buccaneers to seven consecutive Class 7A title games from 2000 to 2006, taking home five blue maps during that span.

Up Next

Coosa Christian now sets its sights on the Class 2A championship game, where they’ll aim to make history by capturing their first-ever AHSAA state title since joining the association in 2005. The Conquerors will square off with the 12-2 Lanett Panthers Friday afternoon at 3:00 PM at Birmingham’s Protective Stadium in the Class 2A title game.  Lanett advanced after knocking off the Reeltown Rebels 35-19 in the south semifinal.
