Harrison Leads Central-Phenix City to Third Consecutive Flag Football Championship
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Central-Phenix City Red Devils secured their third straight Class 6A-7A girls’ flag football championship with a dominant 46-7 win over Vestavia Hills. The victory took place Wednesday at Protective Stadium as part of the 30th Super 7 Championships.
Quarterback Mariah Harrison, named the game’s MVP, guided the Red Devils to their 57th consecutive victory, capping off a perfect 20-0 season.
“We’re always striving to be our best every single day,” Harrison stated.
Coached by Mitchell Holt, the Red Devils have now won the last three state titles. They previously defeated Vestavia Hills 25-0 in the 2023 final and Spain Park 55-7 in the 2024 championship game.
“That Central team, they’re something else,” said Vestavia coach Daniel Davis.
Vestavia Hills (28-2) entered the final with a 28-game winning streak of their own. Their only other loss was to Moody, which won the Class 1A-5A title earlier in the day.
Despite Vestavia striking first with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Julia Rose to Alexis Rubin, Central quickly took control. The Red Devils answered with five first-half touchdowns to build a 34-7 lead by halftime.
Harrison was instrumental in the offensive explosion, throwing touchdown passes of 66 yards to Amya Brooks, 1 and 2 yards to Savannah Sevier, and 17 yards to Colby Cook. Brooks also added a 2-yard rushing touchdown.
In the second half, Harrison scored on a 7-yard run. The game concluded by the mercy rule after Lilly Bell’s 2-yard touchdown run with 4:47 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Harrison delivered a standout performance, completing 13-of-24 passes for 243 yards and rushing for 80 yards on seven carries. She concluded her season with 3,941 passing yards and 80 touchdown passes. Her top target, Sevier, finished the season with 97 catches for 1,596 yards and 43 touchdowns.
For Vestavia Hills, quarterback Julia Rose went 23-of-37 for 194 yards and a touchdown, ending her season with over 7,075 passing yards and 122 touchdown passes.
Team members credited their remarkable success to strong team chemistry. “We keep our eyes forward and focus on what’s in front of us, not what’s behind us,” said Cook.
