James Thompson Out as Pinson Valley Head Coach
PINSON, AL – James Thompson is no longer the head football coach at Pinson Valley High School after two seasons leading the 6A program. The Jefferson County program will begin a search for its next head coach immediately.
Thompson guided the Indians to a combined 5-15 record during his time at the helm. His first season in 2024 concluded with a 1-9 record. The team showed improvement in 2025, finishing with a 4-6 record while competing in the challenging Class 6A, Region 6.
Before taking the head coaching position at Pinson Valley, Thompson served as the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Tuskegee University. He also served as an assistant at Alabama State University.

Thompson’s career includes successful stints at other prominent Alabama high school programs.
From 2018 to 2020, Thompson was the head coach at 6A Carver-Montgomery. He compiled a 19-12 record over three seasons, leading the Wolverines to two state playoff appearances.
His first head coaching role was a notable three-year run at Pickens County from 2015 to 2017. He led the Tornadoes to an impressive 31-11 record. His time at Pickens County was highlighted by significant achievements:
- Two consecutive Class 1A state championship game appearances.
- Back-to-back region titles in 2016 and 2017.
Thompson released a statement on social media addressing the Pinson Valley community.
“Indian fans, thank you. The city of Pinson, Faculty, parents, booster club, student body and coaches. Last but definitely not least, my players. I understand the frustration but always remember we have our plans then God has his plans. We do not have to prove any points. Love you guys.”
Over eight seasons as a head coach, James Thompson has a career record of 55-38. His resume includes five playoff berths, two region titles, and two appearances in the Super 7 state championships. His teams have compiled a 9-5 record in postseason play.
