Thompson Dominates Opelika to Secure Sixth State Title in Seven Years

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Thompson Warriors have once again proven their dominance in Alabama high school football, clinching their sixth Class 7A state championship in the last seven years with a commanding 48-10 victory over Opelika. The game, held at Birmingham’s Protective Stadium, marked the Warriors’ second consecutive title and further solidified their spot as a powerhouse in the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

A Season of Resilience and Redemption

The 2025 season was anything but ordinary for Thompson High School. Despite suffering three regular-season losses, the Warriors (11-3) rallied when it mattered most, winning their final four games, including a nail-biting 35-34 semifinal victory over Central-Phenix City. Head coach Mark Freeman, who now boasts eight AHSAA state titles, credited the team’s perseverance and faith for their success. “Only God could put us in the position we’ve been in the last few years,” Freeman said. “This season was a journey filled with challenges, but our players and coaches rose to the occasion.”

Star Quarterback Trent Seaborn Shines

Junior quarterback Trent Seaborn, a University of Alabama commit, delivered a stellar performance, earning MVP honors. Seaborn completed 16 of 27 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns, surpassing the 10,000-yard career passing milestone in the process. His first-half touchdown passes to Trey Knight and Pryce Lewis helped the Warriors build a commanding 34-3 halftime lead.

“My first focus is to help the team win a state championship,” Seaborn said. “Reaching 10,000 passing yards is a cool accomplishment, but it’s a testament to my teammates and coaches.” Seaborn’s resilience was on full display when he returned to the game after taking a hard hit late in the first quarter. Just two plays later, he threw a touchdown pass, further cementing his status as one of Alabama’s top quarterbacks.

A Dominant Team Effort

Thompson’s victory was a complete team effort, with both the offense and defense excelling. The Warriors outgained Opelika 522-115 in total yards, with RJ Evans leading the ground game with 84 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Pryce Lewis was the standout receiver, recording five catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side, Thompson stifled Opelika’s offense, holding the Bulldogs to just 20 passing yards and intercepting three passes. Trenton McCorvey’s 22-yard pick-six on the first play of the second half extended the Warriors’ lead to 41-3, effectively sealing the game.

“We do a really good job of complementing each other,” Freeman said, highlighting the synergy between the team’s offense and defense.

Opelika’s Historic Run Falls Short

For Opelika (10-4), the loss marked the end of a historic season. The Bulldogs, led by head coach Bryan Moore, reached the Class 7A title game for the first time in school history after a series of impressive playoff victories. Despite the defeat, Moore expressed pride in his team’s resilience.

“We are proud to get here, proud of the moment,” Moore said. “It’s been an adversity-filled year, but there’s a bigger prize we’re still hunting.”

Opelika’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Blake Johnson. The Bulldogs struggled to establish their offense, managing only two first downs in the first half and turning the ball over three times.
