Sweet Water Head Coach Pat Thompson Retires After a Decade of Success

SWEET WATER, AL – Sweet Water High School’s head football coach, Pat Thompson, has announced his retirement after a remarkable decade leading the Class 1A powerhouse. Thompson, who confirmed his decision to AL.com, is stepping away from public school teaching but remains open to new opportunities in coaching or other fields.

“I’m going to retire,” Thompson shared. “I will keep doing something somewhere. I don’t know where yet. I’m going to trust that the Lord has something else out there for me. I just knew it was time to step down here and look for an opportunity somewhere else.”

Thompson’s tenure at Sweet Water is marked by an impressive record of 106 wins and 36 losses. Under his leadership, the Bulldogs clinched state championships in 2017 and 2021, reached the semifinals in 2019, and made it to the quarterfinals three additional times. Despite a 6-4 season this year, which saw the team miss the playoffs for the first time during his head coaching career, Thompson’s impact on the program remains undeniable.

“It’s been a great run,” Thompson reflected. “We have great kids and great support, and that makes a big difference. It makes it easy. These guys kept working hard. Having coached with Stacy Luker and Jack Hankins, I took a lot of what I learned from them and kept going. It’s been a blessing.”

Thompson joined Sweet Water as an assistant coach in 2007 and took over as head coach in 2014, following the departure of Stacy Luker. Over the years, he became a cornerstone of the school’s athletic success, earning respect for his dedication and leadership.

Looking ahead, Thompson expressed interest in exploring coaching opportunities in Mississippi or at private schools, though he’s also considering non-coaching roles. “There is something out there for me. I just need to figure out what I want to do. Whatever it is, I don’t want to go too far from home”.
