Jake Ganus Resigns After Four Seasons as Moody Head Football Coach

MOODY, AL – Just days after leading the Moody Blue Devils to their first-ever state football championship, head coach Jake Ganus has stepped down. The announcement, made Wednesday via social media, marks the end of a transformative four-year tenure that reshaped the landscape of high school football in St. Clair County. Ganus leaves Moody with an impressive 44-10 overall record and a legacy of unprecedented success.

In his four seasons, Ganus engineered a dramatic turnaround for a program that had historically struggled. He guided the Blue Devils to the playoffs in each season, culminating in back-to-back appearances in the Class 5A Super 7 state championship game. After a heart-breaking loss in their first title game appearance, Moody achieved redemption this season, capping a dominant run with a 25-0 victory over Vigor to claim the 2025 5A state title.

An Era of Unprecedented Success

When Jake Ganus, a former standout linebacker for UAB and Georgia, arrived at Moody, the program was far from a powerhouse. Before his tenure, the school had never won more than nine games in a single season. Under his leadership, the Blue Devils achieved double-digit wins every year, completely rewriting the school’s record books.

The 44 wins Ganus accumulated in just four seasons are a testament to the culture he built. To put this achievement in perspective, it took the Moody program 11 seasons, from 2011 to 2021, to achieve the same number of victories. He instilled a belief that Moody could not only compete but dominate.

In a statement, Moody High School Principal Dr. Chris Walters acknowledged the coach’s profound impact. “Four years ago, Jake Ganus came to Moody High School and immediately raised the standard of our football program and student-athletes,” Walters said. “When Coach Ganus arrived, many outside the program believed Moody could not win. With the hard work of Coach Ganus, our coaching staff, and our players, along with the belief he instilled, a new determination took hold.”

The Road to a State Championship

The pinnacle of the Ganus era was the 2025 season. The Blue Devils made their second consecutive trip to the Super 7 at Protective Stadium, a feat that was once unimaginable for the program. This time, they left no doubt. Their commanding 25-0 shutout victory against Vigor secured the first football state championship in Moody High School’s history, a moment of redemption and triumph for the team and the entire community.

This historic win solidified the “411 boys” in Alabama high school football lore, bringing home the coveted blue map and completing one of the state’s most remarkable program turnarounds in recent memory.

A Grateful Farewell

In a heartfelt statement posted on social media, Ganus expressed his gratitude to the school and community that embraced him and his family.

“After four incredible years as the head football coach at Moody High School, it’s time for me to say thank you and farewell to a place that has meant the world to me and my family,” Ganus wrote. “This community welcomed us with open arms and made us feel at home from day one. We will forever be grateful for the relationships, memories, and support that made this journey so special.”

He gave special thanks to Principal Dr. Chris Walters for giving him the opportunity. “He’s the man behind the scenes that makes Moody so special. His vision is what brought me to 411, and his vision is what will continue to make Moody great.”

Ganus concluded his message with a nod to the team’s identity: “Moody will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for four unforgettable years. 411 boys forever.”

What’s Next for Ganus and Moody?

Following the resignation, speculation immediately turned to Ganus’s next destination. Sources indicate that Pell City High School is the likely landing spot. The Pell City head coaching position recently became available after Nick Gentry resigned over the weekend. The Pell City Board of Education has a meeting scheduled where an announcement regarding its new football coach is expected.

Meanwhile, the search for a new leader begins at Moody. Principal Walters expressed confidence that the foundation built by Ganus has made the job highly attractive.

“As we move ahead, the Moody High School head football coach position will be highly sought after, thanks to the strong culture built within our school and the city of Moody,” Walters stated. “Multiple successful coaches have already expressed interest in this position, and we look forward to finding the next leader of our football program as we prepare to defend the 5A Football State Championship.”
