Moody Football Sanctioned For Conduct Following AHSAA State Title Game
MONTGOMERY, AL – The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) delivered significant penalties to the Moody High School football program on Tuesday morning. Following an investigation into events after the Class 5A state championship game, the association announced fines, probation, and suspensions for multiple coaches and players.
The disciplinary actions stem from “flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct” that occurred in the immediate aftermath of Moody’s historic 25-0 victory over Vigor on December 4 at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.
Victory Celebration Leads to Sanctions
Moody High School secured the Class 5A state title with a dominant shutout performance against Vigor. However, the post-game celebration inside the Protective Stadium locker room drew immediate scrutiny from state athletic officials.
Viral photographs circulated on social media showing members of the team smoking cigars in the dressing room facilities.
The AHSAA determined the post-game actions constituted a violation of its conduct rules, leading to the penalties announced this week. In addition to the fines and suspensions, Moody High School is responsible for the costs associated with repairing any damage caused to the Protective Stadium dressing room during the celebration.
Breakdown of AHSAA Disciplinary Actions
The association issued a comprehensive set of penalties affecting both the coaching staff and the student-athletes involved.
Suspensions for the 2026 Season
The sanctions will impact the beginning of the 2026 football season. The AHSAA ruling states that head coach Jake Ganus, four assistant coaches, and 10 players are ineligible to participate in upcoming contests. These individuals are suspended for:
- The 2026 spring jamboree or fall jamboree game.
- The first regular-season game of the 2026 schedule.
Financial Penalties and Probation
The program has been placed on probation for the unsportsmanlike conduct. The AHSAA also levied specific fines against players who have exhausted their high school eligibility. Any senior player involved who does not have eligibility remaining faces an additional fine of $250.
The ruling also addresses potential transfers. If any of the penalized coaches or players move to a different high school other than Moody for the next fall season, the suspensions will follow them and be enforced at their new school.
Head Coach Jake Ganus Steps Down
The sanctions arrive just days after significant leadership changes within the Blue Devils program. Head coach Jake Ganus resigned from his position last week, concluding a successful four-season tenure that culminated in the program’s first state football title.
Ganus departs with a strong record, including 12 playoff wins. Reports indicate he is expected to accept a new coaching position imminently. Under the AHSAA ruling, his suspension terms regarding the 2026 jamboree and season opener will apply to his next coaching role within the state association’s jurisdiction.
