Aubrey Blackwell Returns to Lead Montgomery Catholic Knights

MONTGOMERY, AL – Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School has announced the return of a familiar face to its football program. Aubrey Blackwell, who previously lead the program from 2015 to 2020, is stepping back into the role to lead the Knights in 2026. This marks a homecoming for a coach who not only transformed the program during his first tenure but also set a standard of excellence that continues to resonate.

During his initial six-year stint, Blackwell compiled an impressive 54-19 record, guiding the Knights to five playoff appearances and their first-ever state championship game in 2020. Under his leadership, Montgomery Catholic became synonymous with championship-caliber football, a legacy that school president Justin Castanza is eager to see continue.

Since leaving Montgomery Catholic, he has served as head coach at Benjamin Russell High School, Jackson Academy in Mississippi, and St. James School. Most recently, he was the offensive coordinator at Spanish Fort, where his offense averaged over 400 yards per game. Across his 10-year coaching career, Blackwell boasts an 80-40 overall record.

Athletic Director Daniel Veres, who originally hired Blackwell 11 years ago, expressed his excitement about the coach’s return. “Aubrey, along with his family, is coming back to a place that values them as much as their work. This is a full-circle moment for our program,” Veres said.

Blackwell himself is equally enthusiastic. “Montgomery Catholic is more than a school; it’s a community that values people and excellence,” he said. “I’m honored to return and continue building on the culture we started.”

Blackwell replaces Jonathan Chandler, who led the Knights to an 8-5 record and a quarterfinal playoff appearance in 2025 before departing for Opelika High School. With Blackwell at the helm, Montgomery Catholic aims to reclaim its position as a dominant force in Alabama high school football.
