Hayden Stockton Elevated to Head Football Coach at St. James
MONTGOMERY, AL — St. James School has announced that current assistant Hayden Stockton has been named the Trojans 20th head football coach. Stockton, who previously served as the school’s strength and conditioning coach, brings over 25 years of coaching experience to the role, along with a storied history as a former player for the University of Alabama.
Stockton’s elevation marks a pivotal moment for the St. James football program, which is looking to rebuild after a challenging 2025 season that ended with a 3-7 record. Athletic Director Larry Ware, who served as interim head coach last season, expressed confidence in Stockton’s ability to lead the team to success.
“Coach Stockton brings a combination of experience, character, and roots in this community. He understands what it means to develop young men both on and off the field, and we are confident he will lead our program with integrity.” – Larry Ware | St. James School Athletic Director
Stockton’s extensive coaching career spans both high school and collegiate levels, making him uniquely qualified to guide the Trojans. His previous head coaching stints include West-End Walnut Grove (2009-2011) and Class 5A Marbury (2021-2022). His career head coaching record currently stands at 15-35 with three playoff appearances over five seasons.
A native of Winston County, Stockton played football at the University of Alabama from 1992 to 1996. During his time with the Crimson Tide, he was part of the 1992 National Championship team, which achieved an undefeated season and triumphed over Miami in the Sugar Bowl. This championship experience has shaped Stockton’s approach to coaching, emphasizing discipline, teamwork, and resilience.

“I’ve seen a lot of things you need to do to be successful, and I believe my experience can help this program progress quickly,” Stockton said. “I’m excited to bring a system that’s proven and to work with a team of experienced coaches who share my vision.”
Stockton’s vision for the Trojans extends beyond the football field. St. James Head of School Dr. Larry McLemore highlighted Stockton’s commitment to character development and leadership.
“Coach Stockton has earned the trust of our school community through his character, consistency, and commitment to our students,” McLemore said. “We are enthusiastic about his leadership and confident he will build a program that not only competes on the field but also develops young men of character.”
Stockton will be the Trojans fourth head coach since 2022. Following Larry Ware (3-7), Aubrey Blackwell (6-5) and Neal Posey (11-3) who each had one year stints at the helm of the Class 4A program.
