Opelika Alum Jonathan Chandler Named Bulldogs Head Football Coach
OPELIKA, AL — Opelika High School has announced Jonathan Chandler as its new head football coach, marking a homecoming for the Opelika native. Chandler, who played high school football for the Bulldogs before continuing his athletic career at Troy University, brings a wealth of experience and a deep connection to the community.
Chandler’s coaching journey began at Opelika in 2007, where he served as a ninth-grade assistant coach and head basketball coach. Over the years, he has held various coaching roles, including offensive coordinator at Pike Road in 2024. Most recently, Chandler led Montgomery Catholic to the 5A state quarterfinals during his lone season at the helm of the Knights program in 2025. Chandler’s Knights closed out the season at 8-5 with a 5-1 mark in Class 5A, Region 2 play.
“It’s an honor to come back to Opelika and give back to the community that shaped me,” Chandler said. “My family and I are grateful for the opportunity to serve our students and represent this town with pride. Go Dawgs!”
Opelika City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kevin Davis expressed confidence in Chandler’s leadership. “Throughout this process, it was important for us to find a leader who understands the value of building great men into great fathers, leaders, and citizens while also maintaining and building upon the great tradition of the Opelika football program,” Davis said.

Chandler succeeds Bryan Moore, who resigned after leading the Bulldogs to a 19-7 record over two seasons. Moore’s two year stint in Lee County was highlighted by a trip to the Class 7A state title game in 2025. The Opelika City Board of Education officially approved Chandler’s appointment during a special meeting on January 7, 2026.
With nearly two decades of coaching experience and a personal connection to Opelika, Chandler’s return signifies a full-circle moment, as he steps into a role that allows him to inspire the next generation of athletes in his hometown.
