CHELSEA, AL – Todd Cassity has resigned as the head football coach of the Chelsea Hornets after four seasons at the helm. He leaves the program with an overall head coaching record of 74-72 across a 13-year career that included stops at Gordo and J.B. Pennington high schools.

During his tenure at Chelsea, Cassity navigated the program through a challenging transition from Class 6A to the highly competitive Class 7A, Region 3.

Cassity’s Tenure at Chelsea (2022-2025)

Cassity took over the Chelsea program in 2022, facing the daunting task of competing in Class 7A, in arguably the toughest region in Alabama high school football. The Hornets posted a combined record of 3-17 in their first two seasons in 7A.

A move back down to Class 6A for the 2024 season brought immediate improvement. The Hornets finished with a 6-5 record, securing a spot in the state playoffs. It marked the program’s first postseason appearance under Cassity’s leadership. In the first round, Chelsea fell to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.

He built a reputation for fielding tough, competitive teams that were regulars in the Class 3A postseason.

Head Coaching Beginnings at Gordo (2005-2006)

Cassity’s head coaching career began at Gordo High School, where he led the Green Wave for two seasons. He found immediate success, posting a 16-9 overall record.

In his first year in 2005, he led Gordo to an 8-4 record and the second round of the Class 2A playoffs. In his two years, he proved his ability to lead programs to postseason success, finishing with a 3-2 playoff record.
