Remembering Jimmy Perry: A Hall of Fame Coach and Leader Beyond the Gridiron
MONTGOMERY, AL – The Alabama high school sports community is mourning the loss of Jimmy Perry, a Hall of Fame football coach whose impact extended far beyond the field. Perry passed away on January 10, 2026, at the age of 68, after a courageous battle with cancer. His legacy is one of excellence, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to his players and the sport he loved.
A Storied Career on the Gridiron
Jimmy Perry’s coaching career spanned over four decades, during which he left an indelible mark on Alabama high school football. A graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and Auburn University, Perry began his coaching journey in 1979 at Trinity Presbyterian. His passion for the game and commitment to his players quickly became evident, setting the stage for a remarkable career.

Perry served as head coach at several schools, including Robert E. Lee, St. Paul’s Episcopal, and Saint James. His tenure at Saint James was particularly noteworthy, as he led the Trojans to their first-ever Class 3A state championship in 2022. Over 19 years as a head coach, Perry compiled an impressive 157-69 record, with 17 of his 19 teams earning playoff berths.
In addition to his high school coaching achievements, Perry spent a decade at Auburn University, where he served as Director of High School and NFL Relations and later as Director of Football Operations. His leadership and expertise were instrumental in fostering relationships and advancing the program.
A Legacy of Character and Resilience
Perry’s influence extended far beyond his coaching record. He was known for his integrity, humility, and unwavering faith, qualities that inspired both his players and colleagues. Despite facing significant health challenges, Perry remained steadfast in his commitment to his team and his faith.
“Coach Jimmy Perry was more than a coach; he was a mentor, a leader, and a friend to so many,” said Dr. Larry McLemore, Head of School at Saint James. “His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched.”
Perry’s resilience was evident throughout his career. In 1997, he coached Robert E. Lee to a 9-3 record while battling kidney failure, undergoing a transplant shortly after the season. In 2022, he led Saint James to a state championship while quietly undergoing radiation treatments, a testament to his dedication and strength.
Celebrating a Life of Purpose
Jimmy Perry’s contributions to Alabama high school football were recognized in 2022 when he was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame. In December 2025, Saint James announced plans to name its football stadium in his honor, ensuring that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Perry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Judy; his children, Jana and Danny; and his grandchildren. A Celebration of Life service will be held on January 18, 2026, at Saint James School in Montgomery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Jimmy Perry Memorial Fund, which will support initiatives that reflect his lifelong commitment to faith, leadership, and mentorship.
