Cody Flournoy Named Head Football Coach at Powerhouse Central-Phenix City
PHENIX CITY, AL. — Central High School has announced Cody Flournoy as its 14th head football coach. Flournoy, a two-time state champion head coach, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to the Class 7A powerhouse. .
Flournoy was officially approved by the Phenix City Board of Education on January 13th following the resignation of former coach Patrick Nix. Nix, who led Central to a 65-14 record including three Super 7 appearances, four region titles and a state championship over the past six seasons. Flournoy will be formally introduced to the community during a meet-and-greet event at the school’s Indoor Athletics Facility.
A Championship Pedigree
Flournoy arrives from Jackson High School, where he served as head coach for seven seasons. During his tenure, he compiled an impressive 69-21 record, including back-to-back Class 4A state championships in 2024 and 2025. Under his leadership, The Aggies dominated opponents, outscoring them 1,270 to 361 over the past two seasons. His 2025 squad, led by standout players like Alabama signee E.J. Crowell and South Carolina-bound quarterback Landon Duckworth, capped the season with a commanding 52-0 victory in the state championship game.
Before his time at Jackson, Flournoy coached at Beulah High School, where he turned a struggling program into a playoff contender. In 2018, he was named the 3A Alabama High School Coach of the Year. His record as a head coach currently stands at 80-31, with a 16-6 mark in postseason play, a pair of region titles and two state championships over nine seasons.
A Familiar Face in Phenix City
Flournoy is no stranger to CHS. He previously served as the Red Devils’ defensive backs coach from 2015 to 2016 and was part of the staff that won a state title in 2018. A 1998 graduate of Smiths Station High School, Flournoy also spent eight years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, including four years as defensive coordinator.

“This is a homecoming for me and my family,” Flournoy said. “My wife is an alumna of Central, and I’ve worked here under two different head coaches. The timing felt right, and I’m excited to lead this program.”
High Expectations for the Red Devils
Flournoy inherits a Central team that finished 11-2 last season, narrowly losing to eventual state champion Thompson in the semifinals. The Red Devils return 10 of 11 offensive starters, setting the stage for a promising 2026 campaign.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Flournoy to Central High School,” said Interim Superintendent Nathan Walters. “His championship background, high character, and commitment to community involvement make him the perfect fit for our program.”

Athletic Director Matt Bell echoed those sentiments, emphasizing Flournoy’s ability to develop student-athletes both on and off the field. “We believe Coach Flournoy’s experience and leadership will elevate our program to new heights,” Bell said.
Looking Ahead
Flournoy’s move to Central marks a transition from one championship-caliber program to another. While Jackson High School prepares for its own coaching search, Flournoy is focused on building on Central’s legacy of excellence.
“This is one of the top programs in the state, with incredible facilities and talent,” Flournoy said. “I’m honored to be part of it and can’t wait to get started.”
