Winterboro Dominates Kinston in AHSAA Class 1A Girls Semifinals

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Winterboro head coach Becca Williams grades her team on a tough curve. Even after watching her top-ranked squad systematically dismantle No. 5 Kinston 61-22 at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena on Monday, the highest mark she offered was a ‘B’.

This dominant victory in the Class 1A semifinals extended the Bulldogs’ winning streak to 31 consecutive games. Winterboro has now secured 26 wins by a margin of 20 points or more this season. The team advances to the state championship game, seeking the first state basketball title in program history.

This post breaks down the defining moments of the game, highlights the standout performances, and previews the highly anticipated state championship clash against Marion County.

A Historic Defensive Effort in the AHSAA Final Four

Winterboro basketball relies heavily on speed, length, and relentless defensive pressure. Those traits were on full display during Monday afternoon’s AHSAA Final Four matchup. The Bulldogs set the tone immediately, recording three steals within the opening two minutes to build a quick 6-0 lead.

From that point forward, Kinston struggled to find an offensive rhythm. Winterboro effectively utilized various defensive sets to keep Kinston completely off balance.

Forcing Turnovers and Controlling the Paint

The defensive statistics paint a clear picture of Winterboro’s dominance. The Bulldogs forced 28 turnovers and secured 18 steals over the course of four quarters. During the first half, Kinston managed to connect on just one of their 19 field goal attempts.

Kinston finished the game shooting a mere 12 percent from the floor, including 3-of-20 from beyond the three-point line.

Winterboro also controlled the interior, winning the overall rebounding battle 49-43. The Bulldogs pulled down an incredible 27 offensive rebounds, which translated directly into 21 second-chance points. Winterboro outscored Kinston 46-4 in the paint and dominated transition play with a 15-2 advantage in fastbreak points.

“I knew they were going to be fast and be able to jump and are longer than any team we’ve played all year,” Kinston coach Andrew Norris noted after the game. “I thought we had to do a better job of moving today… you can watch all the film you want, but you can’t get a feel for how fast kids are until you get out there. They’re good.”

Standout Performances Drive Bulldogs

While the defense stifled Kinston, the Winterboro offense found ways to capitalize on the resulting turnovers. The team scored 27 points off Kinston’s mistakes. Despite shooting just 36 percent from the floor and missing all seven of their three-point attempts, the sheer volume of extra possessions carried the Bulldogs to a blowout victory.

Katelyn Brown and Kailynn Williams Lead the Charge

Senior guard Katelyn Brown anchored the offensive attack for Winterboro. Brown scored a game-high 15 points, hitting 7 of her 14 shots from the floor. She also added eight rebounds and five steals to round out a stellar performance.

Kailynn Williams proved equally disruptive, finishing with 12 points, four rebounds, five steals, and three blocked shots. Kaleria Massingale commanded the glass, securing a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with eight points.

Forward Kaniya Duncan provided crucial energy throughout the contest, contributing nine points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Lyric McGhee also delivered a memorable highlight by sinking a buzzer-beater right before halftime to give Winterboro a commanding 25-10 lead heading into the locker room.

The Bulldogs blew the game wide open in the third quarter. Feeding off their defensive energy, they opened the second half by making eight of their first 11 shots, erupting for 28 points in the period.

Kinston Caps a Record-Setting Season

Despite the difficult loss, Kinston finishes the year with an impressive 28-4 record. The Lady Dawgs reached the state semifinals for the first time in program history, setting a new school standard for single-season basketball victories.

Lauren Norris led Kinston offensively with 10 points and two steals. Allyx Williamson fought hard in the paint against Winterboro’s size, pulling down a game-high 17 rebounds and adding five points. Maddie Williamson also contributed heavily on the boards with 12 rebounds.

It is worth noting that the core of this Kinston basketball roster primarily consists of the same athletes who captured the Class 1A state fast-pitch softball title just one year prior. Their athletic pedigree remains unquestioned, and this Final Four appearance establishes a new baseline for the school’s basketball program.

The Quest for the First State Title

With the semifinal victory secured, Winterboro improves to 34-2 overall. Their resume features victories over highly-ranked opponents across multiple classifications, including North Sand Mountain (Class 2A No. 1), Trinity Presbyterian (defending Class 4A champion), Moody (Class 5A), and Homewood (Class 6A).

However, Coach Williams refuses to let her team become complacent. When asked about her post-game grading, she pointed out the missed opportunities near the rim.

“It’s hard to get an A from me,” Williams explained. “I’d say a B, because we were missing layups. If you’re going to get a steal, you’ve got to go down the court, you’ve got to make a layup. Especially when you’re getting banged up, you’re hitting the floor, you’ve got to make your layup, and then you want to make that and-1.”

When informed of her coach’s tough grading scale, Katelyn Brown laughed and acknowledged the high standards required to achieve championship glory.

“We got to score 100, I guess,” Brown said. “That and play good defense.”

Next Up: Marion County

Winterboro now turns its attention to Thursday’s championship matchup against No. 3 Marion County. Marion County earned their spot in the finals following a convincing 74-41 victory over Francis Marion in the other semifinal bracket.

Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Legacy Arena. The matchup promises a thrilling clash between two top-tier programs. For Winterboro, Thursday represents an opportunity to cement their legacy. After a season defined by relentless pressure, overwhelming speed, and dominant rebounding, the Bulldogs stand exactly 32 minutes away from bringing the school its very first state basketball championship trophy.

Fans looking to follow the championship game can stream the broadcast through the NFHS Network or follow live statistical updates via the AHSAA website. Keep an eye on Winterboro’s transition offense and offensive rebounding numbers, as those two factors will likely determine who cuts down the nets on Thursday afternoon.
