Oxford Defense Stifles Saraland in 6A Semifinal

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Oxford High School basketball team secured its spot in the state championship game with a commanding 52-37 victory over Saraland on Wednesday. Playing at the BJCC Legacy Arena in Birmingham, the Yellow Jackets relied on a smothering second-half defensive effort to pull away from a gridlocked halftime score.

The Class 6A semifinal matchup featured two of Alabama’s premier high school basketball programs battling for a chance at the ultimate prize. Oxford (29-4) showcased exactly why they are a top-ranked squad, combining relentless defensive pressure with efficient offensive execution to dismantle Saraland in the final two quarters.

A Deadlocked First Half

The opening two quarters delivered the highly competitive basketball fans expected from a Final Four matchup. Both teams traded baskets and defensive stops, resulting in a 27-27 tie at the halftime buzzer.

Saraland found early success on the glass. The Spartans held a 16-12 rebounding advantage in the first half, creating second-chance opportunities that kept the Oxford defense on its heels. LJ Williams, Saraland’s 6-foot-8 sophomore standout, anchored the interior. He consistently challenged shots and secured rebounds, keeping the Spartans squarely in the game.

Oxford also faced adversity when Chris Latson took a nasty fall late in the second quarter. Despite the physical toll of the game, the Yellow Jackets remained composed, making critical halftime adjustments that would completely change the trajectory of the matchup.

The Turning Point: Oxford Gets Defensive

When the teams emerged from the locker room, the Oxford High School basketball squad looked like a completely different defensive unit. Head Coach Joel Van Meter’s halftime message clearly resonated with his players, who immediately turned up the pressure on Saraland’s ball handlers.

The defensive statistics from the second half are staggering. Oxford held Saraland to just 10 total points after the break. The Spartans struggled to find any offensive rhythm, shooting a dismal 2-for-21 from the field in the final two quarters. During a crucial stretch in the third quarter, Oxford forced Saraland to go 0-for-9 from the field.

“We’re built on defense and rebounding, and I think we did a great job of that,” Van Meter said following the victory. “I think the guys came out and decided, ‘We’re going to get some stops and get some rebounds.’ Our guys decided we’ve got to take it at this moment.”

Oxford also flipped the script on the boards. After losing the rebounding battle in the first half, the Yellow Jackets out-rebounded the Spartans 21-13 in the second half. They limited Saraland to just three offensive rebounds after halftime, eliminating the second-chance points that kept the game close early on.

A Standout Jaylen Alexander Performance

While the defense clamped down, Oxford senior Jaylen Alexander took control of the offense. The leading Mr. Basketball candidate delivered a phenomenal performance to push his team into the state finals.

The Jaylen Alexander performance featured a game-high 22 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. His ability to score from all three levels, distribute the ball to open teammates, and crash the glass proved too much for Saraland to handle. Every time Saraland attempted to build momentum, Alexander answered with a timely basket or a crucial assist.

Marcus Perry Jr. also provided a massive offensive spark for the Yellow Jackets, adding 17 points to the scoreboard. Furthermore, Chris Latson showed incredible toughness by returning to the floor in the fourth quarter after his first-half injury. He capped off his return with an explosive breakaway dunk that energized the Oxford crowd and effectively sealed the victory.

Saraland’s Valiant Effort Falls Short

Despite the lopsided second half, Saraland demonstrated tremendous grit throughout the contest. LJ Williams finished the game with a dominant double-double, recording 19 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocked shots.

Saraland head coach Dru Powell praised the Yellow Jackets after the game, acknowledging the difficulty of replicating Oxford’s intensity in practice.

“They’ve got arguably the best team in the state regardless of class,” Powell said. “We definitely respect them. It’s hard to simulate that kind of pressure and athleticism. When you don’t score much better than we did, the game is really difficult.”

Looking Ahead to the State Championship

With the Class 6A semifinal victory secured, Oxford now turns its attention to the ultimate goal: a state championship banner. The Yellow Jackets advance to face Cullman (27-5) in Saturday’s title game at 2:15 p.m. at the BJCC Legacy Arena.

Cullman earned their spot in the finals following a hard-fought 61-56 comeback victory over Calera in the other semifinal bracket.

For Oxford, the game plan remains unchanged. If the Yellow Jackets can replicate their second-half defensive intensity and rely on another dominant Jaylen Alexander performance, they have a prime opportunity to bring a Class 6A state championship trophy back home. The upcoming matchup promises to be a thrilling conclusion to an exceptional Alabama high school basketball season.
