Sylacauga Rallies Past Guntersville in AHSAA Class 5A Semifinals

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Sylacauga High School defense delivered a masterclass when it mattered most. Trailing late in the final period, the Aggies flipped the script to secure a 59-50 victory over Guntersville in Wednesday’s Class 5A semifinals at the BJCC’s Legacy Arena.

This dramatic win sends the Aggies to their second consecutive state title game. Fans of Sylacauga Aggies basketball witnessed a gritty performance defined by late-game heroics and relentless defensive pressure. We will break down the crucial fourth-quarter run, highlight the standout player performances, and look ahead to the state finals.

A Smothering Fourth-Quarter Defense

For three quarters, the matchup between the Aggies (30-2) and the Wildcats (27-6) was a physical, back-and-forth battle. The teams traded the lead 10 times and tied the game on nine separate occasions. Guntersville carried a narrow advantage into the final frame and looked poised to pull off the upset.

With 4:52 remaining in the game, Kobe Brothers converted a fastbreak three-point play to give Guntersville a 48-45 lead. However, that was the last time the Wildcats would find offensive success until the game’s final seconds. Sylacauga tightened its defensive rotations and shut down the passing lanes.

The Wildcats went scoreless for more than four and a half minutes. Sylacauga capitalized on this drought by unleashing a devastating 14-2 run to close out the game.

“Defense is something we specialize in,” Sylacauga head coach Joel Jones noted after the victory.

Top Performers for Sylacauga Aggies Basketball

Sylacauga relied heavily on its core leaders to navigate the challenging moments of the Class 5A semifinals. Three players scored in double figures to pace the offense.

CJ Franklin Controls the Pace

CJ Franklin anchored the Aggies throughout the contest, recording team-highs in multiple categories. He finished the game with 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. His ability to penetrate the defense and score in the paint kept Sylacauga within striking distance during the first half when they trailed 21-18.

Patterson and Speer Deliver Late

When the game hung in the balance, Corbyn Patterson and Joshua Speer stepped up. Patterson drained a critical 3-pointer with 4:36 left on the clock to tie the game at 48. He finished with 16 points and provided a massive spark from the perimeter.

Less than a minute after Patterson’s shot, Speer tipped in a crucial rebound to give Sylacauga its first lead of the second half. Speer stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, nine rebounds, and four steals.

“We finally calmed down and played Sylacauga Aggie basketball,” Speer explained regarding the team’s late surge.

Guntersville Fights Hard in Class 5A Semifinals

Despite the tough finish, Guntersville demonstrated why they won 27 games this season. The Wildcats controlled the tempo for long stretches and matched Sylacauga’s physicality inside the paint.

Kobe Brothers led the charge for Guntersville with 16 points and seven rebounds. Westin Hammond added 13 points, three steals, and two assists, while Hudson Duvall contributed 10 points to round out a balanced offensive attack. The Wildcats simply ran out of steam against a suffocating defense in the final minutes.

“The game is all about putting the ball in the basket, and we weren’t able to do that in the fourth,” Guntersville coach Brett Self said.

Senior Turner Hammond reflected on the team’s effort, adding, “We wanted it so bad. We practiced as hard as we could. We did everything we could. We fought hard and just came up short.”

Redemption on the Mind for the AHSAA Basketball Championship

For Sylacauga, this victory represents an opportunity to finish unfinished business. The Aggies finished as the runner-up in 2025 after falling 59-49 to Vigor. That loss fueled the program’s offseason preparation and drove their success throughout the current campaign.

Coach Jones did not shy away from discussing last year’s heartbreak. “When we left here last year after the championship, we were very dejected,” he shared. “Getting back here has been in my thoughts night and day. Everything has been about getting back to the finals.”

The Aggies bring a championship mindset to the court, playing with immense confidence. Jones praised his roster’s mental toughness, stating, “They know how to play basketball. They don’t ever think they can lose.”

Sylacauga now advances to the AHSAA basketball championship game scheduled for Saturday at 10:45 a.m. They await the winner of the Wenonah versus LeFlore semifinal matchup. If the Aggies maintain their elite defensive intensity and execute down the stretch, they have a prime opportunity to lift the blue map trophy this weekend.
