Denton Johnson Named Gardendale Head Basketball Coach

GARDENDALE, AL – Gardendale High School has found the next leader for its boys basketball program. Denton Johnson accepted the position as head basketball coach, taking over for Chris Berry, who led the Rockets for six seasons, capped by an AHSAA Class 6A regional appearance in his final season.

Johnson brings nearly a decade of head coaching experience and a proven track record of success to the Rockets.

The Scottsboro native arrives at Gardendale after an extensive career coaching across Alabama. In 2025-2026, he served as the head girls basketball coach at Chelsea High School, where he led the Lady Hornets to a 23-7 record and a berth in the AHSAA Class 6A regional semifinals. His background features a steady climb through the high school basketball ranks, highlighted by a nine-year tenure leading the boys basketball program at Ramsay High School..

A Proven Track Record of Success

Johnson brings a wealth of knowledge to the Gardendale hardwood. He understands the landscape of Alabama high school basketball and knows exactly what it takes to build a winning program from the ground up.

Nine Years Leading Ramsay High School

Johnson served as the head boys basketball coach at Ramsay High School for nine seasons,, where he compiled a record of 209-90. Johnson guided the Magic City program to seven postseason appearances and lead the Rams to back-to-back state championship game appearances in 2021 and 2022. Under his leadership, Ramsay reached the AHSAA Class 5A Final Four five times and consistently advanced deep into the postseason, establishing the program as a perennial contender in one of Alabama’s toughest regions. Johnson emphasized a culture of toughness, defensive intensity, and accountability, helping his players develop on and off the court.

Extensive Assistant Coaching Experience

Before taking the reins at Ramsay, Johnson built his coaching foundation by working alongside respected mentors across the state. He spent several years as an assistant coach at Buckhorn, Enterprise, and Spain Park high schools.

Johnson also brings collegiate experience to the Rockets. Early in his career, he worked as a graduate assistant at Jacksonville State University. This collegiate background gives him a unique perspective on player development and the recruiting process, providing a valuable asset for Gardendale student-athletes looking to play at the next level.

“Normally with a new hire, you’re going to a rebuild situation,” Johnson noted about taking over strong programs. “But this is a healthy position. It’s a highly sought-after position. The way the community is growing, it’s going to continue to blossom.”
