Will Lang Named Guntersville Wildcats Head Football Coach
GUNTERSVILLE, AL — Guntersville High School has officially welcomed Will Lang as its new head football coach, marking a new chapter for the Wildcats’ storied program. The announcement was made during a special-called board meeting on April 9, 2026, by Guntersville City Schools.
Lang replaces former Wildcats head coach Lance Reese who retired after leading Guntersville to a 137-46 record including five region titles and a trip to the AHSAA Class 5A semifinals in 2023 over 16 seasons.
The Wildcats closed out 2025 at 9-2, slipping to Priceville 21-24 in the first round of the AHSAA Class 5A playoffs.
Lang transitions to Guntersville from Hartselle High School, where he served as offensive coordinator, play caller, and associate head coach. During his tenure, Lang established himself as a strategic leader, orchestrating some of Alabama’s most dynamic and high-scoring offenses. His units consistently ranked among the state’s best in scoring and total offensive production, setting multiple school records.
“Coach Lang brings a proven track record of offensive excellence, leadership, and a commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field,” said Superintendent Dr. Brad Cooper. “He is also a great leader who will positively impact our students, our program, and our community. We are excited about the energy, vision, and success he brings to our football program.”
Lang’s coaching philosophy emphasizes discipline, preparation, and accountability, while fostering opportunities for student-athletes to excel both on the field and in life. His leadership at Hartselle was instrumental in the team’s 10-2 record last season, which included a second-round playoff appearance in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A State Football Championships.
The Wildcats, coming off a 9-2 season in 2025, are eager to build on their recent success under Lang’s guidance. The program has a rich history of excellence, with former head coach Lance Reese leading the team to a 137-46 record over 16 seasons, including five region championships and 15 playoff appearances. Reese announced his retirement earlier this year, leaving a legacy as the all-time winningest coach in Guntersville and Marshall County history.
Lang’s appointment signals a commitment to maintaining the Wildcats’ competitive edge while fostering a culture of character development and teamwork.
The Wildcats, who will transition to Class 4A, Region 8, are set to kick off the 2026 season with a Jamboree against Douglas on August 13, followed by their home opener against rival Arab on August 21.
