Championship Winning Head Coach Takes Over Austin Girls’ Hoops Program

DECATUR, AL — Austin High School has officially welcomed Mike Chase as the new head coach of its girls’ basketball program. The announcement, made during a Decatur school board meeting, marks a significant addition to the school’s athletic department.

Chase brings an impressive resume to the Black Bears, boasting over 600 career wins and a history of success at multiple Alabama high schools. His coaching career includes stints at Spain Park, Orange Beach, Mountain Brook, and Clay-Chalkville. At Spain Park, Chase led the Lady Jags to two Class 7A state championships in 2018 and 2020, as well as a runner-up finish in 2017. His teams at Clay-Chalkville also reached the 6A state finals in 2004 and 2008.

Most recently, Chase coached at Orange Beach High School, where he guided the Makos to two area titles and consecutive Sweet 16 appearances. Despite a challenging 15-18 season last year, Chase’s leadership left a lasting impact on the program.

“I’ve been waiting for three weeks to have this team and be at this school,” Chase said in a video shared on social media. “I couldn’t be happier.”

Chase takes over a struggling Austin program that finished the 2026 season with a 4-18 record. The Black Bears are eager for a turnaround under his leadership, and Chase’s track record suggests brighter days ahead.

In addition to his coaching accolades, Chase has earned 17 area championships and five regional titles throughout his career. His overall record stands at 607-377.

Chase and his wife, Kiara, have two college-aged children, Camille and Parker. The family is excited to join the Decatur community as Chase embarks on this new chapter.

With a proven history of building competitive teams, Chase’s arrival signals a fresh start for Austin High School basketball. Fans and players alike are optimistic about the program’s future under his guidance.
