Miller will remain JCA’s principal. Rod Cates, who joined Miller’s staff three years ago, will take over the football and boys’ basketball programs.

After nearly five decades on the sidelines, Tommy Miller is walking away from coaching. The Jacksonville Christian Academy fixture confirmed he will step back from leading the Thunder’s football and boys’ basketball teams, closing one of the longest coaching tenures in east Alabama high school sports.

Miller didn’t make the decision lightly. He admitted he is “struggling” with the choice but said he is following his family’s urging. The move ends a career that stretched across two schools, three sanctioning bodies and more than 360 head-coaching games.

Miller confirmed his decision while attending accrediting meetings in Tulsa, Okla. The announcement, first reported by Joe Medley of East Alabama Sports Today, came nearly a year after Miller first hinted at the possibility during Calhoun County Quarterback Club Media Day.

Importantly, Miller isn’t leaving Jacksonville Christian entirely. He will continue serving as the school’s principal, keeping him connected to the campus and students he has worked with for decades.

Miller coached for 49 years, with 38 of those seasons spent as a head coach. That longevity puts him among the most experienced coaches in Alabama high school athletics.

His career numbers tell the story. As a head football coach, Miller compiled a 183-177 overall record across 38 seasons, according to Alabama High School Football Historical Society records. That mark reflects a career that weathered rebuilding years, division changes and a full reinvention of the program he is best known for.

Before he became synonymous with the Thunder, Miller cut his teeth at Pleasant Valley. He coached there for six seasons, from 1982 through 1987, posting a 22-39 overall record.

The Pleasant Valley years included a standout 1984 campaign, when Miller’s team went 8-3 and reached the playoffs. Those early seasons gave Miller the foundation he would later build on at Jacksonville Christian.

Miller took over at Jacksonville Christian in 1991, when the program competed in the National Association of Christian Conference (NACC). The first season was a tough one, with the team going 1-4. But Miller steadily turned things around.

By the mid-1990s, the Thunder had become a consistent winner. Miller’s NACC teams put together a string of winning seasons, including a 10-2 finish in 1998 that featured a playoff appearance.

Several achievements stand out across Miller’s tenure with the Thunder:

2001 undefeated season: Miller led Jacksonville Christian to a perfect 12-0 record during the NACC era, the high-water mark of his football career.
1,000th career coaching win: On Jan. 28, 2021, Miller earned his 1,000th combined career coaching victory in boys’ and girls’ basketball, a 65-44 Senior Night win over Valley Head, according to East Alabama Sports Today and AHSAA records.
Move to AHSAA Class 1A: The program transitioned from the NACC to the Alabama High School Athletic Association, competing in Class 1A through 2016.
Switch to 8-man football: Jacksonville Christian moved to the 8-man game in 2020, sparking the most successful stretch of Miller’s football tenure.

What were Jacksonville Christian’s best seasons under Miller?

The shift to 8-man football revitalized the Thunder. Miller’s teams reeled off several strong years in the format:

2025: 7-4

Those seasons capped Miller’s run at Jacksonville Christian, where he finished with a 161-138 overall football record across 32 years. Combined with his Pleasant Valley tenure, Miller’s career head-coaching record stands at 183-177.

Rod Cates will take over head-coaching duties for both football and boys’ basketball. Cates coached at Coosa Christian before joining Miller’s staff at Jacksonville Christian three years ago, giving him familiarity with the program he is now set to lead.

The handoff to Cates reflects a deliberate transition rather than an abrupt exit. Miller had already begun stepping back, turning over the baseball team to Jamie Pool before this past season.

Miller’s coaching days are ending, but his presence at Jacksonville Christian will not. As principal, he will continue shaping the school that became his life’s work.
