Taaffe Leads Vestavia Hills Past Parker 32-14 in Season Opener

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — Vestavia Hills quarterback Charlie Taaffe opened his senior season with a big night Thursday, rushing for 204 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Rebels to a 32-14 victory over Parker at Reynolds Stadium.

The season-opening matchup was close through the first two quarters before Vestavia Hills took control after halftime.

Taaffe was the centerpiece of the Rebels’ offense. He carried 22 times for 204 yards and four scores while completing 17 of 21 passes for 109 yards. His performance gave Vestavia Hills a consistent threat on the ground while also allowing the Rebels to move the football through the air.

Vestavia Hills put together a 13-play, 77-yard drive on its opening possession, with Taaffe finishing the series with a touchdown run.

Parker answered behind running back Jeremiah Jackson, and the Thundering Herd remained within striking distance throughout the first half.

Taaffe and Jackson each scored twice before the break, but Vestavia Hills carried a 15-14 advantage into halftime.

The Rebels created separation over the final two quarters.

Vestavia Hills’ defense kept Parker off the scoreboard in the second half, while Taaffe added two more rushing touchdowns. The Rebels outscored the Thundering Herd 17-0 after halftime to turn a one-point game into a comfortable season-opening victory.

The win gave Vestavia Hills a successful start to its first season back in Class 6A. The Rebels moved from Class 7A into Class 6A, Region 3 as part of the latest AHSAA classification cycle. Robert Evans is beginning his fifth season as Vestavia Hills’ head coach.

Vestavia Hills is coming off an 8-3 season in 2025. The Rebels scored 423 points last year and finished 5-2 in region play before falling to Auburn in the opening round of the Class 7A playoffs.

Parker is also competing in a new classification this fall. The Thundering Herd moved from Class 6A to Class 5A, Region 5. Frank Warren is in his seventh season as Parker’s head coach.

The Thundering Herd entered 2026 following an 8-4 season that included a trip to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs. Parker averaged 39.6 points per game and scored 475 points during the 2025 season. Its playoff run ended with a 17-14 loss at Muscle Shoals.

Thursday night’s game was the first meeting between Vestavia Hills and Parker since 2001. The Rebels won that matchup 34-18 and entered Thursday having won all three previous games in the series.

Vestavia Hills will now turn its attention to a two-game road stretch.

The Rebels travel to Benjamin Russell on Friday, Aug. 28, before beginning Class 6A, Region 3 play at Thompson on Friday, Sept. 4. Vestavia Hills then returns to Reynolds Stadium for consecutive region games against Oak Mountain and Spain Park.

Parker returns home Friday, Aug. 28, to face James Clemens in a non-region matchup. According to Alabama High School Football History, it will be the first meeting between Parker and James Clemens.

The Thundering Herd will open Class 5A, Region 5 play the following week, traveling to Mortimer Jordan on Friday, Sept. 4. Parker then remains on the road for a region matchup against Jackson-Olin on Sept. 11.

For Vestavia Hills, Thursday’s victory provided the Rebels with the start they wanted before their schedule becomes considerably more challenging.

Taaffe’s four-touchdown performance gave the Rebels an early offensive spark, while a second-half shutout by the Vestavia Hills defense helped turn a competitive opener into a 32-14 victory.
