Parker Thundering Herd Shuts Down James Clemens Jets 34-7

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Parker Thundering Herd answered a challenge Friday night. One week after opening the 2026 season with a loss, coach Frank Warren’s defense turned in a suffocating performance, holding the James Clemens Jets to just 46 total yards in a 34-7 victory at Major Brown Memorial Stadium in Birmingham.

Class 5A No. 5 Parker (1-1) bounced back from a 32-14 loss to Vestavia Hills by dominating both lines of scrimmage. The Jets, fresh off a 45-24 win over Austin in Week 1, dropped to 1-1 and managed only one score, and it came without their offense ever reaching the end zone.

First Half Action

Parker set the tone early and never let go. The Thundering Herd leaned on a punishing ground game, piling up 191 yards on 32 carries while the defense repeatedly pushed the Jets backward.

Kameron Murphy provided the game’s signature run, breaking loose for a 36-yard touchdown that gave Parker an early cushion. Quarterback Rakaveon Goldsmith added to the lead through the air, connecting on scoring strikes of 18 and 25 yards. Taylor Smith found the end zone twice, giving the Herd a balanced attack that kept James Clemens off balance.

For the Jets, offense was hard to come by. Parker’s front seven stuffed the run on nearly every snap, leaving James Clemens searching for answers that never arrived.

Key Turning Points

The defense was the story of the night. Parker held James Clemens to minus-46 yards rushing, a staggering number that reflected just how thoroughly the Herd controlled the trenches.

“The defense played lights out,” Warren said. “If we hadn’t given up a touchdown on a fumble return, they would have recorded a shutout. I am very proud of our effort on that side of the ball.”

That fumble return accounted for the Jets’ only points, meaning James Clemens never mounted a scoring drive of its own. Murphy’s 36-yard burst and Goldsmith’s pair of touchdown passes turned early momentum into a comfortable lead, and the defense made sure the Jets could not climb back.

Standout Performances

Malik Hardy and Nathan Holmes led a swarming Parker defense, combining for 18 tackles and five tackles for loss. Hardy finished with eight stops and three tackles for loss, while Holmes added 10 tackles and two for loss.

On offense, Murphy carried 10 times for 97 yards and a touchdown. Goldsmith completed 14 of 25 passes for 146 yards and two scores, and Smith reached the end zone twice.

Warren, though pleased, saw room to grow. “We still have a lot to work on. We made too many mental mistakes which lead to penalties. Overall, I was proud of the effort especially defensively,” he said. He also cautioned against reading too much into the rushing totals. “No, we are not a running team yet. We had some great runs tonight, but we want to get our passing game going.”

James Clemens coach Juan Johnson tipped his cap to the Herd. “Parker is a heck of a team. We started out pretty good, but we couldn’t stay with them. Hopefully, this will get us ready for region play. I am playing tough teams on the road to get us ready for the games that matter.”

Final Outlook

Both teams now shift their attention to region play, where the results carry the most weight.

Parker travels to Mortimer Jordan next week to open Class 5A, Region 5 competition. The Herd will look to build on their defensive breakthrough and sharpen the passing game Warren wants to develop.

James Clemens returns home to host Madison City rival Bob Jones in the Class 6A, Region 4 opener. Johnson’s road-heavy nonregion slate was designed to prepare the Jets for exactly this kind of stretch, and a bounce-back effort against a familiar foe would go a long way toward reaching those postseason goals.

For Parker, the message was clear: the defense has arrived. For James Clemens, the road ahead offers a fresh start where it matters most.
