Gulf Shores Stuns No. 1 Saraland 34-24 in Fourth-Quarter Rally

SARALAND, AL — Gulf Shores flipped a lopsided script Friday night, outscoring Saraland 20-0 in the fourth quarter to erase a 10-point deficit and beat the state’s top-ranked team 34-24 at Spartan Stadium.

The road win snapped Saraland’s 41-game home winning streak and pushed the Dolphins to 3-0. Saraland, ranked No. 1 in the state entering the game, fell to 1-1. Gulf Shores became the first visiting team to leave Saraland with a victory in nearly six years.

Spartans Set the Early Tone

Saraland controlled the first three quarters and looked every bit the part of the state’s best team. A field goal opened the scoring in the first quarter, and quarterback Jamison Roberts went to work through the air. Two of his touchdown passes staked the Spartans to a 17-7 halftime lead.

Roberts kept the pressure on early in the third quarter, connecting for his third scoring strike with 5:21 left in the period. That put Saraland ahead 24-14 and, based on years of results at Spartan Stadium, seemed to signal another comfortable home win.

The Turn Late in the Third

The momentum shifted on special teams. Late in the third quarter, Saraland muffed a punt that Gulf Shores recovered deep in Spartans territory. The Dolphins wasted no time cashing in.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Elijah Malone punched in a short touchdown run to cut the lead to 24-21. Suddenly, a game that felt decided had turned into a fight.

Gulf Shores Takes Over

Saraland’s next drive stalled when defensive lineman Adam Duncan dropped Roberts for one of his three sacks on the night. The Spartans lined up for a 31-yard field goal, but Malone burst through and blocked it. Joc Prince scooped up the loose ball and returned it 75 yards, flipping the score and the emotion of the game in Gulf Shores’ favor.

The Spartans answered with a drive that reached the Gulf Shores 21 before it fizzled out. Then Malone slammed the door. With about three minutes to play, he broke free for a 77-yard touchdown run that put the game out of reach and sealed the 34-24 result.

Standout Performances

Malone delivered one of the most complete individual efforts you will see at any level. The senior carried just seven times but piled up 133 yards, scoring on runs of 28, 6 and 77 yards. He also blocked the field goal that Prince returned for a score and contributed on defense at cornerback.

Duncan anchored the Gulf Shores front with three sacks, repeatedly disrupting Saraland’s timing in the second half. Prince’s alert 75-yard return of the blocked kick proved to be the swing play of the night.

For Saraland, Roberts finished 19 of 36 for 218 yards and three touchdowns. He gave the Spartans a lead that held up for three quarters, but the fourth-quarter surge left him and the offense searching for answers.

Recruiting Spotlight

The matchup featured several of the state’s most sought-after players. Roberts, an Oklahoma commit, ranks No. 5 on AL.com’s Best in Bama list. Teammate Keoni Snipes, an uncommitted junior, checks in at No. 8. Gulf Shores receiver Carter Davis, committed to West Virginia, is ranked No. 24.

What’s Next

Gulf Shores will look to keep its momentum going with a home game against Blount. The Dolphins have opened the season with a steady scoring formula, and the confidence from knocking off the No. 1 team should carry into the next stretch of their schedule.

Saraland turns the page quickly, hosting Theodore as the Spartans try to begin building a new home winning streak. With the talent on their roster and a season still full of opportunity, Jeff Kelly’s team has plenty of time to regroup.
