Opelika Holds Off Enterprise 38-21 in Class 6A Region 2 Opener
OPELIKA, AL – Opelika turned a tight halftime game into a comfortable win Friday night, riding a punishing ground game and two defensive touchdowns to a 38-21 victory over Enterprise at Bulldog Stadium in a Top 10 Class 6A showdown.
The No. 8 Bulldogs (1-1, 1-0 Region 2) shook off a season-opening 21-7 loss to Hoover and clamped down on the No. 10 Wildcats (2-1, 0-1) in the second half. Enterprise arrived unbeaten, having outscored Pike Road and Crestview, Florida, in impressive fashion, but the Bulldogs controlled the line of scrimmage after the break and never let the visitors back in the game.
How the Game Unfolded
Opelika set the tone early. The Bulldogs jumped ahead 7-0 on a short Jalen Nelson touchdown run in the first quarter, then stretched the lead to 13-0 in the second when Braiden Howard picked off a pass and raced 26 yards to the end zone.
Enterprise answered before halftime. Kenyon Kilow bulled in from 3 yards out to trim the deficit to 13-7, sending the teams to the locker room with the outcome still very much in doubt.
The second half belonged to the home team. Nelson broke free on a 33-yard scoring run, and he later hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Austan Cristiaan to give Opelika breathing room. Reese Beasley added a 27-yard field goal to keep the scoreboard turning.
Kilow kept the Wildcats fighting with a spectacular 99-yard kickoff return for a score and a 43-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Mac Houston. But every Enterprise push met a Bulldog response. Xavier Thomas slammed the door with an 18-yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:10 left, setting the final margin at 38-21.
Standout Performances
Nelson was the engine of the Opelika attack. The senior back rushed for 128 yards on 17 carries and accounted for three touchdowns — the 8-yard and 33-yard runs plus the 12-yard reception — mixing power and patience behind an offensive line that wore Enterprise down as the night wore on.
The Bulldog defense produced points of its own. Howard’s 26-yard pick-six and Thomas’ 18-yard return bookended a night when Opelika turned takeaways into six points at both ends of the game. Beasley handled the kicking chores with a steady leg, drilling a 27-yard field goal and flipping field position with punts of 56, 43 and 56 yards.
Cristiaan managed the offense efficiently, completing 11 of 22 passes for 86 yards while letting the run game carry the load.
Enterprise had its own star in Kilow, who scored all three Wildcat touchdowns in three different ways — a rushing score, a kickoff return and a receiving touchdown. Houston kept the passing game moving, finishing 17 of 27 for 199 yards. The Wildcats simply could not match Opelika’s second-half surge or answer the two defensive scores.
Looking Ahead
The win moves Opelika to the top of the Region 2 standings and gives the Bulldogs momentum after a rocky start to the season. Coach Jonathan Chandler’s group will look to build on its balanced performance and carry the same physical brand of football into its next outing.
For Enterprise, the loss is the first blemish on an otherwise strong start. The Wildcats remain a dangerous team with a versatile playmaker in Kilow and a productive passer in Houston. Cleaning up the mistakes that fueled Opelika’s defensive touchdowns will be the priority as Enterprise regroups and chases its first region win.
Both programs will be worth watching as the Region 2 race takes shape over the coming weeks.
