Homewood Rolls Past Helena 34-7 to Stay Perfect in Class 5A Region 4
HELENA, AL — Homewood turned two big first-quarter strikes and a defensive touchdown into a comfortable road win, beating Helena 34-7 on Sept. 18 to remain unbeaten in region play.
The Patriots (4-1, 3-0 Class 5A, Region 4) scored in every quarter but the fourth and forced two turnovers, including a 93-yard interception return for a score. The Huskies (2-2, 1-2) dropped their second straight game and now sit near the bottom of the region standings.
Fast Start Puts Patriots in Control
Homewood set the tone early. Jackson Chapleau punched in a 2-yard touchdown run to open the scoring, and quarterback Timothy Roshell followed with a 58-yard touchdown pass to Beckam Newell for a 14-0 lead.
Helena answered before the first quarter ended. Caleb Soreano found JP Schultz on a 17-yard scoring connection to trim the deficit to 14-7 and give the home crowd reason for hope.
Hicks Adds Points Before the Break
The Patriots leaned on their kicking game to push the lead back out. Jozy Hicks connected on field goals of 28 and 31 yards, sending Homewood into halftime up 20-7 and taking the momentum with them.
Third-Quarter Surge Breaks It Open
Homewood pulled away after the break. Tyler Betts capped a drive with a 13-yard touchdown run, and moments later Chapleau jumped a Helena pass and raced 93 yards to the end zone for a defensive score. The two touchdowns turned a two-possession lead into a 34-7 rout that Helena could not answer.
Standout Performances
Newell paced the Homewood offense with six catches for 111 yards and a touchdown, accounting for most of the Patriots’ receiving production. Chapleau delivered a versatile night, adding 51 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown to go with his 93-yard interception return. Roshell was efficient through the air, completing 5 of 9 passes for 101 yards.
Helena found some ground production from Jacoby Studimire, who rushed for 78 yards. Schultz chipped in 47 receiving yards and the team’s lone touchdown. Soreano finished 11 of 21 for 103 yards passing.
Looking Ahead
Helena returns home Sept. 25 to host Pleasant Grove as it looks to snap a two-game slide. Homewood has next week off before hosting Calera in a region matchup Oct. 2, with a chance to keep its perfect Region 4 record intact.
