Parker Blanks Minor 28-0 as Thundering Herd Defense Dominates Class 5A Region 5 Clash
BIRMINGHAM, AL – No. 2 Parker made a clear statement in Class 5A, Region 5 play, riding two rushing touchdowns from Kameron Murphy and two scoring strikes from quarterback Rakaveon Goldsmith to receiver Travion Edwards in a 28-0 shutout of Minor. The Thundering Herd improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in region play, staying unbeaten in league games while Minor slipped to 2-2 and 1-2.
Parker Strikes First
Parker set the tone in the opening quarter. Murphy capped an early drive with a 2-yard touchdown run out of the Wildcat formation, putting the Thundering Herd up 7-0 with 5:33 left in the first.
The lead grew before the quarter ended. Goldsmith connected with Edwards down the right sideline for a 45-yard touchdown, stretching the margin to 14-0. The big play showcased the chemistry between the two, who would team up again later in the night.
Defense Sets the Pace
The story of this one was Parker’s defense. The Thundering Herd kept Minor out of the end zone all four quarters, limiting the visitors’ scoring chances and controlling the line of scrimmage. Minor never found sustained rhythm on offense, and Parker’s front and secondary combined to hold the shutout intact from start to finish.
That defensive effort gave Parker the freedom to play with a lead the entire game and lean on its ground attack when it mattered.
Fourth-Quarter Cushion
Parker put the game away in the final period. Goldsmith and Edwards linked up once more, this time for a 29-yard touchdown with 7:44 remaining, pushing the advantage to 21-0.
Murphy sealed the scoring with his second touchdown of the night, a 29-yard run with 1:12 to play that made it 28-0. Murphy finished with two rushing scores, Goldsmith with two touchdown passes and Edwards with two touchdown catches, a balanced night that reflected Parker’s control on both sides of the ball.
Looking Ahead
Both teams shift out of region play next week. Parker (4-1, 3-0) hosts Carver-Montgomery in a non-region matchup, looking to keep its momentum rolling. Minor (2-2, 1-2) travels to Center Point, also for a non-region game, aiming to regroup and get back to .500 before returning to region action.
For Parker, the win reinforces its standing among the state’s top 5A programs. For Minor, the road ahead offers a chance to sharpen its offense and build on a young season with plenty still to play for.
