Roberts, Pettway Power No. 3 Saraland Past Baldwin County 63-14
Jamison Roberts accounted for six touchdowns and Saraland scored on nearly every possession Friday night, as the third-ranked Spartans rolled to a 63-14 road win over Baldwin County in a Class 5A, Region 1 matchup.
The Oklahoma commitment threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score, leading Saraland (3-1, 2-1) to its second straight lopsided victory since a Week 3 loss to Gulf Shores. For Baldwin County (1-4, 0-3), the loss extended the Tigers’ skid to four games.
Fast Start Sets the Tone
Saraland wasted little time taking control. Roberts found his rhythm early, connecting with Larry Pettway for the first of the receiver’s three touchdown grabs. Chris Cunningham added a scoring reception of his own as the Spartans built a comfortable cushion before the first quarter closed.
The visitors kept the pressure on through the second quarter. Roberts spread the ball around, and Pettway broke free again to stretch the lead. By halftime, Saraland had turned the game into a rout.
Spartans Pull Away After the Break
Baldwin County managed a pair of scores to reach 14 points, but the Tigers could not keep pace. Roberts capped the Saraland passing show with his fifth touchdown throw and later added a rushing score, showcasing the dual-threat ability that has drawn national attention.
Pettway provided the night’s signature highlight, taking a handoff and racing 80 yards to the end zone. The explosive run pushed the margin even wider and underscored Saraland’s depth on offense. Reserves Ayden Pugh and Kaden Young each punched in rushing touchdowns down the stretch as the Spartans emptied their bench.
Standout Performances
Roberts was the centerpiece, tossing five touchdown passes and adding a rushing score to remind observers why he ranks among the state’s top quarterbacks.
Pettway stole the show among the pass-catchers. He hauled in three touchdown receptions and broke off the 80-yard scoring run, giving him four total touchdowns on the night. Cunningham chipped in two touchdown catches, giving Roberts a reliable second target throughout.
The ground game got contributions from Pugh and Young, both of whom found the end zone as Saraland closed out the win.
For Baldwin County, the two second-half touchdowns offered a bright spot in an otherwise difficult evening. The young Tigers continue to search for consistency against a demanding region schedule.
Looking Ahead
Saraland steps out of region play next week with a road trip to Pell City. The non-region test gives the Spartans a chance to sharpen their attack before returning to the Region 1 chase.
Baldwin County is idle next week. The Tigers will use the open date to regroup before hosting Gulf Shores in a region game on Oct. 2, hoping the extra week helps turn the corner on their season.
