Hail Mary Lifts Tennessee’s Knoxville Catholic Past Hoover 20-17 at the Hoover Met
HOOVER, AL – Hoover thought it had done enough. Then one snap changed everything.
Alabama commit Braylen Gibbs hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass on the game’s final play Friday night, sending Knoxville Catholic to a stunning 20-17 win over Hoover in a non-region clash at the Hoover Met. The junior receiver rose above a crowd in the back of the end zone, secured the ball through contact and held on as he hit the ground, sealing a heartbreaker for the Buccaneers.
The loss dropped Hoover to 3-3, marking its third defeat in the last four games. Knoxville Catholic improved to 5-1, though the Irish will not have a postseason to chase — the program is ineligible for the TSSAA playoffs after a recruiting violation.
Knoxville Catholic Strikes First
The Irish drew first blood in the opening quarter. Under pressure while scrambling, Hoover quarterback Kaleb Freeman lost the football, and Liam Gray scooped it up and rumbled 5 yards for a fumble-recovery touchdown. The early miscue gave the visitors a 7-0 lead and set the tone for a night defined by wild swings.
Hoover Answers With a Two-Score Second Quarter
Hoover steadied itself with a methodical march that ate up chunks of the field. Freeman capped the drive by powering through a defender at the goal line on a 20-yard touchdown run, knotting the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter.
The Bucs’ defense quickly gave the offense another chance. Safety DJ Waluyn picked off Bartholomew on the very next snap, handing Hoover prime field position. Jordan Williams did the rest, carrying three times for 38 yards on the drive before finishing it with a 7-yard touchdown run out of the Wildcat formation. Hoover led 14-7.
Gibbs Ties It Before the Break
Knoxville Catholic refused to fold. With 29 seconds left in the first half, Gibbs made an acrobatic grab in the corner of the end zone, hauling in a touchdown that pulled the Irish even at 14-14 heading into intermission. It was an early glimpse of the game-changing play he would deliver hours later.
Bucs Grind Out a Third-Quarter Lead
Hoover leaned on its ground game after the break, stringing together a lengthy, 17-play drive. The march stalled near the goal line, but Steele Witschy delivered from short range, drilling a 25-yard field goal to nudge Hoover back in front, 17-14.
A Fourth Quarter of Missed Chances
The final period offered Hoover several openings to put the game away, but each one slipped through the Bucs’ fingers.
A short Irish punt and a kick-catch interference penalty handed Hoover the ball deep in Knoxville Catholic territory. A false start and a sack pushed the Bucs backward, and Witschy’s 45-yard field-goal try drifted short and left.
Later, Malik Boggan appeared to seal the win with a 20-yard touchdown run, only for a holding penalty to wipe it off the board. Hoover eventually went for it on fourth-and-15, and Ja’Myreion Dickerson nearly made the gamble pay off, hauling in a toss toward the back corner of the end zone before drifting out of bounds.
Even after Anderson Clark converted a key first down and KJ Wright dropped Bartholomew for a sack on fourth-and-9, the Bucs could not slam the door.
The Improbable Finish
Trailing by three with 29 seconds left, Knoxville Catholic had one last breath. Bartholomew slipped free of pressure and found Brayden Howard for a 45-yard strike, moving the Irish inside Hoover’s 30 with 10 seconds on the clock.
After a first attempt into the end zone fell incomplete, Bartholomew took the final snap, drifted left, circled back to his right and heaved a jump ball toward the back line. Five players leaped for it. Gibbs came down with it. Touchdown. Ballgame.
The dramatic finish overshadowed a night in which Hoover’s defense had done plenty of work. Wright and Myles Bunkley combined for pressure up front, Waluyn’s interception flipped momentum, and defensive backs such as Hunter Wetherholt kept the Irish honest. Skill players like Jordon Ward, Andrew Renfroe, Paxton Weatherly and King Sims all factored into an offense that moved the ball but could not finish enough of its trips.
Looking Ahead
The schedule offers Chip English’s Bucs no time to sulk. Hoover hosts Class 6A No. 1 Thompson next Friday at the Hoover Met, a marquee matchup against the state’s top-ranked team. A quick rebound — and cleaner, penalty-free football — will be essential against the undefeated Warriors.
Knoxville Catholic, meanwhile, continues a season without a playoff prize at the end of it. The Irish will keep building on their 5-1 record and the confidence of a road win that came down to the final tick, with Gibbs’ catch serving as a highlight the program won’t soon forget.
