Moutain Brook Defense Shuts Down Oxford, 10-3, to Claim Homecoming Victory

MOUNTAIN BROOK AL – Mountain Brook won the yardage battle where it mattered most: the scoreboard. The Spartans leaned on a suffocating defense to hold off Oxford 10-3 on homecoming night Friday at Spartan Stadium, turning in a gritty performance that made up for a quiet offense.

The Yellow Jackets outgained Mountain Brook 306-146 and ran nearly twice as many plays. None of it mattered. Every time Oxford threatened, the Spartans stiffened, capping the night by stopping a late drive at their own goal line to preserve the win.

Defense Sets the Tone Early

Neither offense found much room in the opening half. Mountain Brook struggled to string drives together, while Oxford moved the ball between the 20s but stalled when it counted. The Spartans’ pass rush stayed relentless, dropping backup quarterback Ethan Pate again and again.

Oxford finally broke through just before the break. Eli Pesnell drilled a 30-yard field goal as the first-half clock expired, sending the Yellow Jackets into the locker room with a 3-0 lead. It felt slim, and it was.

Spartans Answer After Halftime

Mountain Brook shifted the momentum in the third quarter. William Russ knotted the game at 3-3 with a 25-yard field goal, rewarding a defense that kept giving the offense chances.

The go-ahead score came through the air. Quarterback Pruet James dropped back and found John Colvin, who laid out for a diving 37-yard touchdown grab. The catch put the Spartans ahead 10-3 — a lead the defense would guard the rest of the way.

Oxford had one last shot in the closing minutes, marching deep into Mountain Brook territory. The Spartans forced a fumble that pushed the Yellow Jackets backward, then batted away two straight passes to end the threat and seal the victory.

Standouts on Both Sidelines

Colvin was the difference-maker, hauling in five catches for 100 yards and the game’s only touchdown. James finished 9 of 17 for 134 yards, doing enough to complement a defense that carried the load.

That defense stole the show. Graham Smith racked up five tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack, while Josh Holloway and Will Ellis each brought down Pate twice. The Spartans piled up six sacks in all, keeping steady heat on Oxford’s backup signal-caller throughout the night.

Oxford had its own bright spots. Joshua Dupree churned out 76 rushing yards, and Andre Ford was a steady target with nine receptions for 95 yards. Pate battled behind a leaky pocket, absorbing six sacks in a tough spot filling in under center.

Both Teams Sit at 4-2

The win pushed Mountain Brook to 4-2 and extended the Spartans’ winning streak to three games, a stretch that has showcased just how far their defense has come. Oxford dropped to 4-2, a matching record that reflects a talented team still searching for its footing away from home.

For the Yellow Jackets, the loss stings, but the season outlook remains solid. A healthy roster and cleaner execution could quickly flip close games their way.

What’s Next

Mountain Brook stays home to host Ramsay, a matchup with real weight in the region standings. The Spartans will look to keep their momentum rolling.

Oxford turns its attention to a home date with Springville on Oct. 9. The Yellow Jackets will aim to get well and bounce back in front of their own fans.
