Hugh Fountain named Pike Liberal Arts head football coach

Troy, AL – The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots have landed their next leader on the gridiron.  The Troy private school officially named Escambia Academy’s Hugh Fountain the program’s 14 head football coach Monday afternoon.  

The veteran head coach will lead the Patriots in their first season of Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) play in 2022.  The Troy private school announced in April that they will me making the move from the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA).  

Fountain will also serve as the school’s athletic director. 

Fountain brings 35 years of head coaching experience to PLAS, including a 94-31 record, a pair of AISA state titles and four region crowns over the past decade at the helm of the Escambia Academy football program.

Before taking over at Escambia Academy in 2012, the East Brewton native lead Troy’s Charles Henderson High to a combined 106-67 record, highlighted by a region title in 2007 and ten post season appearances over 16 seasons.  Earlier in his career he spent seven seasons at his alma mater, W.S. Neal, guiding the Eagles to a 49-29 mark including a region title, six playoff berths and a trip to the AHSAA Class 4A semifinals in his final season.  His first head coaching stop was a one year stint at Evergreen where he posted a 4-6 record in 1988.  

The former Troy State University lineman currently holds a 253-133 overall record, including a 110-51 mark in region play, a pair of AISA state titles, six region crowns and 26 postseason appearances over 35 seasons. 

After parting ways with former head coach Mario White, Pike named former assistant Rush Hixon the program’s head coach.  Following Fountain’s hire, the Patriots announced that Hixon will remain with the program as an assistant football coach, assistant athletic director and head baseball coach. 

Hixon took over the Pike program prior to their first round playoff matchup and guided the Patriots to their second consecutive AISA state title.  

Fountain will lead the Patriots on the gridiron for the first time August 19th, on the road, at Mobile Christian.
