Former University of Alabama and NFL Standout Trent Richardson Joins Ramsay Coaching Staff

Birmingham, AL – Trent Richardson, the former standout running back for the University of Alabama and the Cleveland Browns, is charting a new course in his football career, moving into high school coaching a decade following the conclusion of his NFL career.

The Pensacola, FL native has accepted the position of running backs coach at Birmingham’s Ramsay High School. The Rams, who completed the 2023 season with an impressive 12-3 record advancing to the AHSAA Super 7 Championships before falling to state champion Gulf Shores 21-14 in the Class 5A state title game.

During his collegiate career, Richardson shined as a two-time BCS National Champion with the University of Alabama, earning unanimous All-America honors, and was a two-time All-SEC first-team member. In 2011, he was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year and was bestowed with the prestigious Doak Walker Award.

Following his illustrious career with the Crimson Tide, Richardson was selected by the Browns as the third overall selection in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. The 5-foot-9, 228-pound running back had a noteworthy rookie season, rushing for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns, alongside snagging 51 receptions for 367 yards and one touchdown. His tenure with the Browns was short-lived, though, as after achieving 105 yards on 31 carries across the first two games of the 2013 season, he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2014 first-round draft pick.

Richardson closed out his NFL career with a two stint with the Indianapolis Colts and short stops with the Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Colts.  Additionally, Richardson’s professional football path included a season with the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders and a year with the Alliance of American Football’s Birmingham Iron, where he emerged as the league’s Rushing Touchdowns Leader.
