Aubrey Blackwell Named Saint James Head Football Coach

Montgomery, AL – Coaching veteran Aubrey Blackwell has official been named the Saint James Trojans’ 17th head football coach. Bringing over two decades of coaching experience to Carlisle Field, Blackwell rejoins the Trojans, eager to contribute to the Montgomery program’s legacy.

Blackwell, familiar with the ethos of Saint James School, intends to leverage the sport’s platform to instill essential life skills such as character, integrity, and resilience among students. “Football is more than a game; it’s a teaching ground for vital life lessons,” shared Coach Blackwell.

Previously, Blackwell made a lasting impact at Saint James from 2012-2014, playing a pivotal role on former Trojans’ head coach Jimmy Perry’s staff, and ushering the team to their first region title.

A graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, Blackwell returns to the Capital City after spending the past two seasons at the hem of Mississippi’s Jackson Academy.  Blackwell’s extensive coaching resume also includes head coaching stops at Benjamin Russell High School and Montgomery Catholic.  Earlier in his career he spent time as an assistant at Mobile’s Saint Paul’s Episcopal School.

From 2015-2020 Blackwell built Montgomery Catholic in to a central Alabama power posting a 54-19 record including a 29-9 mark in region play, three region titles and a Class 3A runner-up finish in 2020. 

He spent one season at Class 6A Benjamin Russell in 2021, leading the Wildcats to a 3-7 finish before making the move to Mississippi to take the reigns of the Jackson Academy Raiders program.  He lead the Raiders to a combined 17-9 record highlighted by back-to-back trips to the  MAIS playoffs. 

Saint James’ Head of School Dr. Larry McLemore expressed enthusiasm about Blackwell’s return, citing his commendable leadership qualities and alignment with the school’s values of Character, Commitment, Courage, and Community. Dr. McLemore is optimistic about the trajectory of the football program under Blackwell’s stewardship.

An alumnus of the University of Montevallo, Blackwell was inducted into the Falcons’s Hall of Fame following a standout college career on the baseball diamond.  

His accolades include the 2017 Alabama Football Coaches Association 4A Head Coach of the Year recognition and multiple Capital City Conference Coach of the Year honors.

Blackwell currently holds a 74-35 head coaching record including three region championships, a state runner-up finish, and two state semifinal berths.
