AHSAA All-Star Sports Week | North-South All-Star Tennis Rosters Announced
The rosters for the 4th annual AHSAA North-South All-Star Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis competition have been finalized. Brandon Dean, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA), released the four 10-member teams consisting of rising seniors from the class of 2024 on Tuesday.
The AHSADCA, operating under the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA), will host prep all-star games as part of the All-Star Week from July 17 to 21. In addition to tennis, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, cross country, and golf competitions will take place. All-star squads for fall and winter sports have already been announced.
Last December, the 64th annual North-South All-Star Football Game took place in Mobile, with the South emerging victorious with a score of 42-7.
Among the notable players selected for the North all-star team is Pippa Roy, the 2023 Class 6A No. 1 girls’ singles champion, and Luke Schwefler, the runner-up in boys’ singles from state champion Mountain Brook. Roy, who has won three consecutive No. 1 singles titles, has the chance to become a rare four-time state singles champion next spring if she successfully defends her title. Annie Lacey, Roy’s teammate and the Class 6A No. 2 singles champion in 2023, also made the North girls’ squad.
The South girls’ all-star team features standout player Lillian Kidder from McGill-Toolen Catholic, who finished as the runner-up in the Class 7A state tournament’s No. 2 singles category last month. Kathryn Kirkland and Hanbi Youn, both from Auburn, are also part of the South squad. They played crucial roles in helping the Tigers secure the Class 7A girls’ state championship. Kirkland won the No. 6 singles title, while Youn was the runner-up at No. 5 singles. LAMP, the Class 5A state champion, contributes two members to the South boys’ all-star team, namely Ian Shin and Ian Kim, who clinched the Class 5A No. 2 and No. 3 singles titles, respectively.
The North-South all-star girls’ and boys’ tennis competition is scheduled for Monday, July 17. The North currently leads the all-star girls’ tennis series 3-0 after their 6-3 victory in last year’s competition. In the boys’ category, the North holds a 2-1 advantage, with the South emerging victorious with a score of 6-3 in 2022. Tennis was added to the All-Star Week lineup in 2019.
