Second ranked Mtn Brook bounces No. 6 Clay-Chalkville 21-10

Mountain Brook, AL – The No. 2 Mountain Brook Spartans (12-1) knocked off the sixth ranked Clay-Chalkville Cougars 21-10 Friday night in the class 6A quarterfinals at Spartan Stadium.   

The win marks the Spartans first trip to the 6A semifinals since 2010.  Clay-Chalkville’s season comes to a close at 11-2.  The Cougar’s 2020 campaign was highlighted by wins over playoff teams Gardendale, Shades Valley and Minor, 7A contender Oak Mountain and postseason shutouts over Southside-Gadsden and Homewood. 

The stingy Spartan defense held the Cougars to 239 total yards despite missing the services of defensive coordinator Robert Evans who missed the game due to COVID-19.  

Mountain Brook signal caller Strother Gibbs was perfect thought the air, completing 4-of-4 passes for 34 yards while rushing for 112 yards on 29 attempts and pair of scores.  Michael Brogan added 89 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown.

Clay-Chalkville quarterback Khalib Johnson finished the night with 120 yards throught the air, connecting on 10-of-18 throws and tossed an interception while rushing for 49 yards.  Edward Osley lead the Cougars on the ground with 100 yards on 17 attempts and Jaren Van Winkle split the uprights with a 35 yard third quarter field goal.  

Mountain Brook will travel to Pinson next Friday to take on the Region 6 champion Pinson Valley Indians (10-2) for the right to advance to the Super 7 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
